DAP not happy with the latest statement on Islamic law

KOTA BARU: PAS leaders yesterday pressed ahead with the implementation of hudud as traditional voters of DAP view the latest twist with growing apprehension.

Further confirmation of the losing fight to paper over the Pas-DAP antagonism over ideology ahead of the May 5 polls came when Datuk Ahmad Yakob, the No. 2 in Kelantan's Pas government said:

"Hudud is still our struggle although it is not included in the manifesto. We will continue to pursue it."

Ahmad, who is Kelantan Pas deputy commissioner and deputy menteri besar, was speaking at the launch of the Kelantan Pas manifesto themed "Blessings, Prosperity and Welfare" at the state Pas building here .

In Kluang, Johor DAP chairman Dr Boo Cheng Hau echoed the party's alarm.

He said Pas should have consulted DAP leaders before making statements concerning hudud.

He said such a statement, made without the consent of all three parties under Pakatan, would harm the coalition.

DAP and Pas are political allies and ideological foes within the framework of Pakatan.

The other player, PKR, is routinely dismissed as the weakest link in the grouping.

PKR has stayed on the sidelines since Pas deputy spiritual leader Datuk Dr Haron Din re-ignited the hudud debate on Tuesday.

In Kuala Terengganu, Pas president Datuk Seri Hadi Awang attempted to minimise the damage, maintaining that DAP was not opposed to Pas version of hudud and that the party had merely disagreed with Pas over its implementation.

"The issue arises when Pas wants to implement hudud. DAP disagrees but it does not oppose it," he said during a rally in Batu Rakit on Wednesday.

In Arau, Haron said it was possible that Pas would leave the opposition pact because of the strong objection to hudud's implementation by its allies.

"Even marriages will see separation and two good friends might have to go on separate ways. Anything and everything is possible," he said, adding that enemies today could become friends tomorrow.

"My stand on hudud has been clear. Hudud should be implemented," he said during a ceramah at Kampung Lalang in Pauh, near here, yesterday.
