Sarawak Barisan Nasional (BN) has rejected the main reason behind it losses in urban areas in the recent 13th general election due dwindling support of Chinese communities.

Sarawak Chief Minister and state BN chairman Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud

disagreed with the term "Chinese Tsunami" to describe the Chinese pattern of

voting favouring the opposition because BN's loss may be due to internal factors

rather that external factors.

"Based on the analysis of voters outside Kuching like Sarikei, Sibu and Miri

we lost by a small margin," he said at the community dinner conjunction with the eight anniversary of Miri City here tonight.

Referring to the Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) losses in six out of

the seven parliamentary it contested in the 13th general election, he said,

there were encouraging signs that BN, particularly SUPP could regain the trust

of the voters especially outside Kuching City.

The tone of Umno-owned Utusan Malaysia’s post-election coverage continued today to be focused on blaming the Chinese community for Barisan Nasional’s poor showing.

Utusan Malaysia also maintained its defence of its incendiary front-page headline on Tuesday “Apa lagi Cina mahu? (What more do the Chinese want?)” by soliciting comments from Malay leaders to say the newspaper was not racist but merely championing the majority race of the country.

Analysts have said data from voting trends showed the outcome of Election 2013 was not simply the result of a “Chinese tsunami” as Datuk Seri Najib Razak had claimed, but a major swing in the urban and middle-class electorate that saw Malaysia’s urban-rural rift widen.

DAP calls for ‘one-man, one-vote’ polls reforms

The electoral system should be reformed to allow a government to be elected based on the popular vote, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said today.

He pointed out that although Pakatan Rakyat (PR) won the popular vote at 51 per cent in Election 2013, Barisan Nasional (BN) had formed federal government by winning 60 per cent of the 222 federal seats.

“PR winning 51 per cent of the popular vote, yet only 40 per cent of the parliamentary seats, cries out for genuine polls reforms that respects the ‘one-man, one-vote principle’ to save democracy,” Lim (picture) said in a statement.

GE13: Many factors caused swing, say Umno duo

Stop pointing fingers and playing the race card in the aftermath of the general election, said Umno leaders Khairy Jamaluddin and Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah.

Khairy, who is Umno Youth chief, called for calm emotions to lead the way and said no one should “jump the gun and blame one community”.

He also urged leaders to speak out against any person trying to racialise matters.

“Cool heads must prevail in the next couple of weeks. There are too many emotions running wild and it is important we do not escalate the situation,” he said.

Chinese tricked into anti-BN tsunami, Nazri says

The Chinese were misled into thinking a Pakatan Rakyat-led (PR) government would spell the end of special rights for the Malays and Bumiputeras, senior Umno politician Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Aziz has said as he joined his peers in describing Sunday’s “Chinese tsunami”.

The Padang Rengas MP insisted that the “tsunami” suggested by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak had been very real, as it was clear from the polls outcome that the Chinese community had “voted along racial lines”.

“Let’s call a spade a spade. It was very obvious they voted along racial lines. I am not going to be apologetic about that fact.

“But what I am saying is that they were misled, many among these first-time voters were also naive... thinking that they can topple BN and thinking that the special rights for the Malays and the Bumiputeras will be abolished,” he told
