'Old friend' Ghani Othman tells how many issues faced by the Chinese community were solved

GELANG PATAH: OUTGOING Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman is reaching out to the Chinese community here by introducing himself as their lao pengyou (old friend).

Ghani has been using the Mandarin phrase in meetings with the community grassroots.

He explained that the lao pengyou concept carries a straightforward meaning in his context.

"I have been here long enough and this gives me an opportunity to relate to many matters pertaining to the local community," said Ghani, who has been the Johor menteri besar for the past 18 years.

GE13: Irate PAS leaders demand explanation from Johor DAP deputy chairman over call to reject Islamist party


With polling day just a week away, irate PAS leaders have asked Johor DAP deputy chairman Norman Fernandez to explain his statement urging voters to reject the Islamist party.

However, Fernandez has reiterated he would continue to express his personal views on sensitive issues such as hudud and public interest cases.

“This is a democracy and everyone is entitled to their opinion. If PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang, PAS secretary-general Datuk Mustafa Ali and PAS vice-president Datuk Husam Musa can give their opinions, why not me?” he asked.

In an article written in the syed outsidethebox.blogspot.com blog on Saturday, Fernandez said the DAP must realise that PAS was no longer an honest, viable partner of Pakatan Rakyat and must be courageous enough to admit it.

Pakatan Rakyat's leadership council has condemned the violence during campaigning and urged the police to act quickly to nab the perpetrators, said PKR leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Quick action by the police, he added, would also clear the air over claims that Pakatan supporters were behind the trouble.

He said several patients at a hospital in the state had urged the Health Ministry to look into a case of a doctor for spending much time campaigning for the Opposition instead of patients.

He was commenting on a doctor, who is a medical unit head at a rural government hospital in Alor Gajah, who is alleged to openly campaign for the Opposition.

Musa Hassan joins Pakatan security panel, concerned about political violence



Former federal police chief Tan Sri Musa Hassan has joined Pakatan Rakyat’s (PR) security advisory council, saying today he was concerned about political violence in Election 2013.

The ex-Inspector-General of Police insisted he was apolitical, telling reporters that he would do the same if the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) asked for his advice on national security matters.

“I’m apolitical... I came today because I take the safety of the people very seriously,” Musa (picture) told a press conference here.

A controversy is brewing in the Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf), with brothers P. Waythamoorthy and Uthayakumar said to be at loggerheads over the former's support for the Barisan Nasional.

An SMS is being circulated stating that Waythamoorthy, who is the Hindraf chairman, has been sacked by the group's “supreme council” and that Uthayakumar would now lead Hindraf in championing the “anti-Barisan crusade”.

The Barisan and Waythamoorthy's faction in Hindraf had on Sunday inked an MoU in Brickfields where Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak endorsed a blueprint for the uplifting of the Malaysian Indian community.

Warrant of arrest issued against Hindraf's Uthayakumar over sedition case



A warrant of arrest has been issued against Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) leader P. Uthayakumar for not attending a Sessions Court hearing over a sedition charge brought against him.

When contacted, Uthayakumar, who is contesting for the Kota Raja parliamentary seat and the Sri Andalas state seat in the May 5 polls, said the warrant was issued despite him having a medical certificate (MC) from April 2 to May 17 exempting him from court appearance.

GE13: Kedah DAP committee member Neelamekan also wants voters to shun PAS




Another DAP leader has urged voters to reject PAS in the general election until the party abandons its call for an Islamic state.

Kedah DAP committee member S. Neelamekan said the Federal Constitution was clear in that Malaysia was a secular state, adding that the incessant calls by PAS over the implementation of hudud law were “highly disturbing”.

He said PAS had been consistent in the type of administration it had been pushing, describing it as “dangerous” to Malaysia.

“The only way we can stop this is to stop PAS,” Neelamekan said.

“I will certainly not vote for PAS and I urge DAP members and Malaysians to do the same. The party does not deserve our votes,” he said.

Eyeing big Johor win, Najib approves another Chinese school



The Barisan Nasional (BN) is going all out to get the Chinese votes to keep Johor in Election 2013, with Datuk Seri Najib Razak approving another Foon Yew High School to be built in Pasir Gudang here.

The BN chairman said the school is to cater to the growing student population in the state and reflected the coalition’s concern for all races in the country.

Some 10,000 students are now enrolled at the main Foon Yew campus in Stulang and branch campus in Kulaijaya.

Earlier in Pontian, Najib expressed confidence that Johor BN would be returned to power with a thumping victory, securing more seats than in the 2008 general election.

Malaysia In Perak, Pakatan sees victory in increased rural Chinese support




Pakatan Rakyat (PR) is confident of taking Perak this May 5 with increased support from Chinese voters in the rural Malay-majority seats as they have now warmed to voting in a non-Chinese to represent them.

The Chinese form the minority in many of these rural seats where PR parties, particularly Islamist PAS, had lost by small margins in Election 2008.

But Perak DAP secretary Nga Kor Ming said that with PAS, the DAP and PKR now campaigning as one under the PR umbrella, the rural Chinese community has grown more comfortable voting for Muslim candidates from PAS or PKR.

“In our latest independent survey, we are quite optimistic. We have strong seats now... between 35 and 38. The best is 40,” he told when met on the campaign trail in Trong, near Taiping, on Friday.

Man shot dead outside RTD office

A 39-year-old man was shot dead by an assailant along Jalan Seremban-Tampin at the entrance to the Road Transport Department state headquarters here yesterday morning.

In the 9.30am incident, the victim, N. Ragunathan, who worked as a runner, was driving alone in his Proton Perdana to the RTD, when two men on a black-coloured Yamaha 125Z motorcycle pulled up alongside his car. As the car stopped along the road the pillion rider then jumped off the motorcycle and fired three shots at Ragunathan.

"The shots hit his head and body," said State Criminal Investigation Department Chief Assistant Commissioner Hamdan Majid at a press conference at the state police headquarters here yesterday. Hamdan said the assassins then escaped from the scene.

Customs Department director-general Datuk Seri Khazali Ahmad expressed his shock and disbelief over the passing of his deputy, Datuk Saharuddin Ibrahim.

"I cannot believe this and I am in shock over what has happened," he said today. Khazali said the late Saharuddin was a very committed and dedicated man.

"This is a great loss to the department," he added. It was learnt that Saharuddin would be buried today at the Precinct 20 cemetery. The body was sent to Kuala Lumpur Hospital at approximately 11.25am from Putrajaya Hospital for a post mortem.

KOTA BARU: PAS leaders yesterday pressed ahead with the implementation of hudud as traditional voters of DAP view the latest twist with growing apprehension.

Further confirmation of the losing fight to paper over the Pas-DAP antagonism over ideology ahead of the May 5 polls came when Datuk Ahmad Yakob, the No. 2 in Kelantan's Pas government said:

"Hudud is still our struggle although it is not included in the manifesto. We will continue to pursue it."

55 students hospitalised after inhaling poisonous gas

Fifty-five Form Four and Form Five students of SM Seri Pantai in Kuala Kedah were rushed to the Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah suspected of having inhaled poisonous gas.

"They are showing symptoms like difficulty in breathing and vomiting but all are in stable condition," the hospital's director Datuk Dr Juita Ghazalie said.

"All have been warded because we do not know the exact cause," he said.

Kedah Fire and Rescue assistant director of operations Nazri Zakaria said a Hazmat team was sent to the school at 9.38am.

"Their clothes have been taken for analysis because gas detectors failed to find any poisonous gas in the school area till 1pm but we found a chemical susbtance called acrolein which is mainly used in the manufacture of fertiliser," he said.

He added that gas could have been due to farming work in the vicinity of the school because no leaks were detected at a fertiliser factory nearby.

Kedah Education director Mansor Latt said classes at the school continued as normal after the Fire and Rescue Department gave the all clear signal.

GE13: EC refutes claims person with three ICs can vote three times


The Election Commission has refuted claims in the social media that an individual with the name Ab Rapar Awang is in possession of three identity cards and will be voting in three different locations in Pahang.

EC secretary Datuk Kamaruddin Mohamed Baria (pic) said their checks revealed that it was a case of three different individuals bearing the same name, Ab Rapar Awang, all with different identity card numbers, pictures and thumbprints.

He said Ab Rapar Awang's case was not uncommon as there were many people having the same names in the country.

“For example, there are 1,507 names in the Voters Registry for Ismail Ibrahim, Fatimah Abdullah (1,401 names), Fatimah Ismail (1,377), Fatimah Ahmad (1,377), Ismail Ahmad (1,368) and Azizah Ahmad (1,039 names).

The suit stated that Mustafa and his lawyer Asmuni Awi had caused the publication of five defamatory articles against Umno on April 12 and 13 in.

Four youths nabbed over murder of jogger at Bkt Gasing

Four suspects were arrested in connection with the attempted robbery and murder of jogger Ong Ai Sam, 52, at Bukit Gasing on Saturday, said Selangor police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Tun Hisan Tun Hamzah on Tuesday.

The four are aged between 16 and 18.

The suspects were detained by police at Flat Sri Medan and Flat Bukit Gasing Indah between 1am and 3am Tuesday, he said.

Ong Ai Sam, was with her daugther on Saturday when they were approached by two men armed with knives wearing full-face helmets at about 4.30pm.

Ong shouted to her 17-year-old daughter to run to safety.

She selflessly blocked the two suspects while her daughter tried to get help from other pedestrians in the area.

Ong's daughter returned to the scene with a man and found her mother lying in pool of blood.

She was rushed to the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre, but succumbed to her injuries on the way there 20 minutes later.

Family recalls victim as loving mum who gave to community

KUALA LUMPUR: SELFLESS, enthusiastic, loving, dedicated, joyful -- the tributes flowed from friends, relatives and the family of Irene Ong Ai Siam, who was murdered during a botched robbery in Bukit Gasing on Saturday.

Eldest sibling Chin Hui Ying, 21, led the tributes, saying Ong was a dedicated, selfless mother who never asked for anything in return.

Hui Ying, who studies at the RMIT University in Melbourne, said she last saw her mother in February. On Saturday, she received a video call from my father, Chin Wing San, and younger sister, Hui Wei.

"They told me to sit down and then broke the news. They said mama had been mugged and attacked by thieves," Hui Ying said.

MARANG: PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang has launched an attack on several PKR candidates, labelling them drug dealers and communist sympathisers as well as "devils and troublemakers".

He also lambasted PKR for its "relaxed" attitude in selecting candidates, which he believed could jeopardise the opposition pact.

The tirade was made just before PKR's announcement yesterday that it would be pulling out its candidates contesting in the same three Terengganu state seats vied by Pas.

Addressing a crowd of around 200 Pas supporters on Sunday at Kampung Tebakang, Bukit Payung, here, Hadi had attempted to explain why Pas and PKR had pitted their candidates against each other in the Kota Putera, Seberang Takir and Bukit Besi state seats.

He said Pas had no choice but to do so to save the opposition.

GE13: Karpal gives Sim and Lee second chance, withdraw as independent candidates within 24 hours



DAP national chairman Karpal Singh has given 24 hours for Sim Tong Him and former Teratai representative Jenice Lee to publicly apologise and withdraw themselves as independent candidates.

"The party will not hesitate from expelling those who commit an act of rebellion against the party.

"But I give them 24 hours to publicly apologise and declare that they would not sustain the status as Independent.

"What they have done could have been driven by emotions but it is unforgivable and intolerable," he said in a press conference Sunday.

Sim is the incumbent for the Kota Melaka parliamentary, but he also filed his papers as an Independent for the Kota Laksamana state seat in Malacca.

GE13: Deputy IGP warns employers not to influence employees’ votes







Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar has advised everyone, especially employers, not to threaten or force their workers to vote for a particular party during polling day on May 5.

He said the reminder was made as police had received information that several employers in Johor had threatened to retrench workers who vote for certain political parties.

"According to information received in Johor, there are employers threatening their workers that they would be sacked if they vote for a certain political party," he told reporters at the ceremony to award the National Sovereignty Medal to 25 police personnel involved in the Lahad Datu intrusion by Sulu gunmen in February.

The medals were handed out by Rural and Regional Development Minister and Semporna incumbent MP Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal on Sunday.

Malaysian footballers could play for Cardiff City, says Najib

Datuk Seri Najib Razak today spoke of the possibility of Malaysian footballers playing for the Malaysian-owned Cardiff City FC team of Wales which has secured promotion to the English Premier League (EPL) next season.

The prime minister said Malaysian footballers could be allowed to play for the Welsh team to gain experience playing top-level football.

Children of Felda settlers had been sent to Cardiff City for training and we could send them again to Cardiff to enable them play at a higher level, he said when opening the Felda Industrial and Recreational Complex near here.

Letters to be issued to them tomorrow, says Najib

PEKAN: BARISAN Nasional (BN) will issue letters of expulsion tomorrow to members contesting as Independent candidates.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who is also BN chairman, said the coalition should not be faulted for the decision as the members had gone against the party's "clear" directive not to contest.

"If we have one or two (members) that we need to sacrifice, let it be. I would rather sacrifice them than sacrifice our beloved party," he said in his speech to Pekan BN members at his official residence here.

Najib said disciplinary matters must not be taken lightly while personal aspirations should not supercede the interests of the party.

Five killed as motorcycles-cars crash
