Khir Toyo: ‘1Melayu, 1Bumi’ not racist

The “1Melayu, 1Bumi” movement is not racist for wanting to unify Malays politically, Dr Khir Toyo has said.

Calling the movement spearheaded by Malay rights group Perkasa as “legitimate and noble”, the former Selangor mentri besar questioned why Malays were seen as racist when speaking of Malay unity while other races could speak of their respective unity without objection from the Malays.

“I always wonder why when Malays speak of their native rights it is seen as racist but not when the Chinese speak of their Chinese schools, Chinese language and Chinese economic power,” he said on his blog yesterday.

Perkasa tells non-Malays to view it positively

Perkasa today said the Chinese and Indian communities should view it in a positive light as it was acting in accordance with the law.

The right-wing Malay group added that there was no secret agenda behind its struggle to defend the rights of Malays.

Kedah Perkasa president Syed Osman Mansor said it fought for Malays because “the Malays have become disunited because of politics.”

He said, however, that Perkasa has improved Malay unity as seen in two large gatherings held in Pasir Mas, Kelantan, and Pasir Salak, Perak, this year.

Utusan represents the Malay voice, says DPM

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyddin Yassin said today that Utusan Malaysia represents the Malays and boycotting the paper will muzzle the community’s voice.

He was responding to calls by the MCA to boycott the Umno-owned newspaper after it called for a “1 Melayu, 1 Bumi” movement.

MCA deputy publicity chief Loh Seng Kok warned that such a movement could lead to apartheid in Malay-majority Malaysia.

Muhyiddin (picture), who is also Umno’s deputy president, said the government could not stop the newspaper from reporting the news.

Perkasa huffs and puffs outside MCA HQ

Around 50 members of the right wing NGO Perkasa today protested in front of MCA's headquarters in Kuala Lumpur over the party's call for a boycott of Umno-linked daily Utusan Malaysia.

Carrying placards that read, amongst others, "MCA don't play with fire" the protestors shouted slogans such as "Hidup Melayu" (Long live the Malays) and "Hidup Utusan Melayu" (Long live Utusan).

Lim Kit Siang rebuked Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin today for saying Utusan Malaysia speaks for the Malay community, claiming instead that the deputy prime minister was using the paper to defy Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s 1 Malaysia.

The DAP strongman charged that Muhyiddin was “a picture of absurdity” for making his proclamation earlier today and described the statement as the latter’s “second unkind cut” against Najib.

He questioned if by endorsing Utusan Malaysia’s “1 Melayu, 1 Bumi” movement, the country’s administration was running on two separate idealogies — Najib with his 1 Malaysia platform and Muhyiddin with “1 Melayu, 1 Bumi”.

“Utusan Malaysia is not the voice of the Malays as right-thinking and rational Malays like right-thinking and rational Malaysians have been migrating away from Utusan Malaysia particularly to online media.

“But what should really cause consternation is that Utusan Malaysia is at best the voice of Muhyiddin particularly at odds with the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

“How can Muhyiddin give endorsement to Utusan Malaysia’s call for ‘1 Melayu, 1 Bumi’ when it is clearly an open affront and repudiation of Najib’s 1 Malaysia signature policy?” Lim asked in a statement today.

On Friday, MCA deputy publicity chief Loh Seng Kok warned that the “1Melayu, 1 Bumi” movement mooted by the Malay-language daily would create apartheid in Malay-majority Malaysia.

Prior to that, Utusan Malaysia had called on its owners Umno to spearhead a “1Melayu, 1Bumi” movement involving all Malay parties, claiming that the DAP was intent on toppling the country’s Malay leadership.
