34 people were arrested during a drug raid at an oill palm plantation near the Sungai Udang Prison in Melaka. One of the man who was arrested during the raid left his four-year-old daughter alone in his car.

He left his four-year-old daughter alone in his car and parked it by the road-shoulder to beat a path, deep inside an oil palm plantation to buy drugs from a supplier.

This was what the police learnt when they arrested the man during a drug raid at an oil palm plantation near the Sungai Udang Prison here yesterday.

During the 12-hour drug raid, beginning 6am, a police team picked up 34 people aged between 26 and 62.

Tighter scrutiny at checkpoints

A car being given a comprehensive check

STRINGENT checks on all vehicles, both Malaysian registered and foreign ones, were seen at the border checkpoint, here yesterday.

A three-hour observation by the New Straits Times saw owners of the vehicles abiding by all rules and regulations and instructions given by the authorities at the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex (CIQC) as their vehicles were thoroughly checked.

Boots of passenger vehicles leaving and entering the country were inspected by Customs officers.

Pick-up trucks, in particular, were subjected to thorough screening to detect modified vehicles transporting Malaysian subsidised fuel out of the country and also smuggling of controlled items at the Anti-Smuggling Unit (UPP) checkpoint, about five kilometres from the CIQC.

Some of the passengers, when asked, said they were used to the situation as they had been going through such thorough checks for some time now.

Smuggling of drugs amplified

KLIA drug bust
HIDDEN: Govinden (centre) showing the syabu packets stashed inside the amplifiers

WHEN a courier agent came to the Royal Customs Department Complex at KL International Airport (KLIA) last Saturday at 10pm to pick up three mid-size consignments, there wasn't a reason for the authorities to doubt anything.

Except, for the fact the man came in a Perodua Viva and not a lorry -- the common transport of choice for cargo pick-ups.

Suspicion further heightened when Customs officers found the packages, declared as megaphones on the consignment documents, to be heavier than what the cone-shaped horn used to amplify voices or sounds, should be.

The officers asked the agent to open one of the boxes. Inside was an amplifier.

Suspecting something amiss, Customs opened the amplifier to find five packets of syabu stashed inside its components.

THE floor mats stuffed inside his backpack did not raise suspicion. But his movements about the KL International Airport (KLIA) did.

On Monday at 7.42am, KLIA Customs officers saw an Indian national suspiciously roaming about the airport's Passenger Terminal 1 Complex with a backpack. The man had just arrived from Delhi on a transit flight from Chennai to Kuala Lumpur.

KLIA Customs director, Datuk M. Govinden, said when officers screened the bag, they only saw three floor mats and clothes inside it.

"He was casually dressed and from his style, we thought he was on a day-visit to Malaysia."

The man, 34, began acting up when officers sought to open and check his bag.

Drugs in car pistons leave cops amused

'SILLY' ATTEMPT: The seized car pistons containing drugs

Another foolish technique of smuggling drugs has emerged with the arrest of a Nigerian who concealed 1.4kg of syabu (methamphetamine) worth RM350,000 in 10 car engine pistons.

The suspect, aged 28, attempted to dupe police officers at the KL International Airport (KLIA) that the pistons, kept among his clothes in a suitcase, were to be delivered to a car accessories outlet here.

The man landed here last Sunday from Dubai, and naturally police were puzzled as to why he would fly 5,533km to KL to deliver 10 boxes of pistons.
