'Teoh sent wedding invites by SMS'

The messages, written in Chinese characters, were among the 32 SMSes which were translated by a court interpreter yesterday.

The Royal Commission of Inquiry heard that Teoh Beng Hock had sent out text messages inviting people to his wedding reception on Oct 3, 2009.

The messages, written in Chinese characters, were among the 32 SMSes which were translated by a court interpreter yesterday.

Teoh had also received text messages asking about his well-being after he was called in for questioning by the Selangor branch of Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

Teoh was found dead on the fifth floor corridor of Plaza Masalam on July 16, 2009.

The MACC had brought him in for questioning overnight on July 15. He was to register his marriage to school teacher Soh Cher Wei on July 17.

Below are some of the messages which were read out during proceedings yesterday.

- Beng Hock, how are you? Someone said you died after jumping from a building. I was afraid and shocked. After that, someone said you were all right. Then I was relieved. Hope you are okay. Kak Lan.

- Beng Hock, you are now popular. How are you? We are worried about you. Remember to inform us that you are safe when you are out.

- Beng Hock's life lights up the world. Let us give him a send off. We must take care of his child.

Other messages which were translated included one which Teoh had sent, revealing that the MACC was at his office to check the computers.

These entries were recorded in a report prepared by Inspector Mohd Zaidi Abu Hassan, 29, from the computer crime section of the Kuala Lumpur forensics department.

The sender of these SMSes and the specific dates of each message received or sent out, however, were not mentioned.

Zaidi, who had extracted the data from Teoh's Sony Ericsson phone, SIM card and memory card, prepared the report containing the entries between July 7, 2009 until July 17.

According to the report, Teoh made his last call at 6.15pm on July 15 to his employer, Seri Kembangan assemblyman Ean Yong Hian Wah.

Another witness, chemist Zahaira Awang told the inquiry that Teoh's toxicology analysis in his blood specimen, urine sample and stomach contents showed that he was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

When asked by MACC lawyer Datuk Seri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah if she had analysed the samples for contents of glucose and cholesterol, the witness said no.

Shafee: Can you analyse the glucose and cholesterol levels with the samples now?

Zahaira: I can try but there are no stomach contents left and the urine samples are insufficient. As the blood samples were not kept refrigerated, the microorganism in the blood would react to glucose. The results would be inaccurate.

Commission member Datuk Dr Bhupinder Singh, a senior consultant forensic pathologist, agreed the samples by now would be contaminated.

"The tests should have been conducted immediately after the blood was taken from the test tube."

Shafee then explained that the purpose of raising this was because a person who is hypoglycemic or a person with very low cholesterol level, are usually moody and may be suicidal. This, he said, were based on medical articles which he had read.

The commission panel will also decide today whether to allow a psychiatrist to sit in the inquiry to evaluate the overall facts given by witnesses, as suggested by Shafee.

Counsel Christopher Leong from the Bar Council proposed that another psychiatrist be called to sit in.

"We have tried to find one but most were reluctant to come to the inquiry," he said.

Commission chairman Tan Sri James Foong Cheng Yuen then quipped: "Why are they reluctant? They are just sitting in... not coming in as commissioners."

Earlier, Foong also said that the commission had made attempts to contact two foreign experts -- Dr Pornthip Rojanasunan from Thailand and Dr Peter Vanezis from the United Kingdom -- to secure their attendance in the inquiry.

Both these experts had testified in the inquest which was previously held to ascertain Teoh's death.
