Selangor blames politics for Putrajaya nixing auxiliary cops idea

The Selangor government criticised the Home Ministry today for rejecting its offer to form an auxiliary police, claiming that the Barisan Nasional (BN) has substituted public for political interests.

The Pakatan Rakyat (PR) government had sent a letter to the Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein to accept the state’s offer to form an auxiliary police team as a solution to the rise in crime in the state.

Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim said the proposed auxiliary police team would only “assist” and “complete” the police force’s daily routine and not “replace” the enforcement duties of the police.

Hishammuddin said on Thuesday the formation of an auxiliary police was unnecessary as crime index in the state has declined and described idea as a waste of public funds.

However the Selangor Mentri Besar’s office said that crime rate was still high despite the drop.

“The ratio of police officers and peple recommended by Interpol is a police officer to 250 people. According to 2011 statistics, Selangor has 11,700 officers of which only 30 per cent are one duty in one sift. This means that in one shift, the ratio is 1:1,424.

“Obviously the police cannot accommodate the needs of the public. The Selangor ogverment is very concerned with the increasing demands by the public for the authorities to take a more robust approach in dealing with the crime wave affecting them,” Selangor Mentri Besar’s political secretary, Faekah Husin, said in a statement.

Faekah added that the Selangor people are still not satisfied with the level of security and increasing dependence on private companies to maintain their safety.

She also said that the proposal to cooperate with the police has no political motive but to safeguard public wellbeing.

“We do not seek recognition or intend to take over the role of the police. We just want the federal government to be more open and consider the interests of the people,” said Faekah
