Surviving Ampang snatch thief remanded at hospital bed

The 25-year-old Indonesian man who robbed an architect in Taman Megajaya in Ampang last Monday has been remanded for seven days, beginning today, to assist the police's investigation into the case.

Ampang Jaya district police chief ACP Amiruddin Jamaluddin, said the suspect was given the remand order at his hospital bed in Ampang Hospital at 11.30am.

He said the suspect will continue receiving treatment at the hospital until he is well enough to be transferred to police lock-up.

"It will all depend on the doctor's assessment of the suspect's condition," said Amiruddin.

He also said the suspect regained consciousness after two days being in a coma and police are in the process of taking his statement.

The suspect sustained injuries to his arms and legs while his 34-year-old compatriot was killed when their motorcycle collided with their victim's Toyota Vios at the junction of Jalan Mega 7 in Taman Megajaya, Pandan Indah on Monday.

The drama unfolded at 8.40am when the woman, 28-year-old Siti Aishah Mahyudin, was closing the gate of her home in Jalan Mega 11. She had left her handbag on the front passenger seat of her car when she exited the vehicle.

Suddenly, two men on a motorcycle appeared and opened her car door before grabbing the bag.

A struggle ensued with the suspects, who kicked her before revving their motorbike and escaping. Undeterred, the woman jumped into her car and gunned the accelerator, intent on giving chase.

Her determination paid off when she encountered the suspects at Jalan Mega 7.

By that time, the suspects had panicked when they realised she was on their tail. Worse, the road they were on led to a dead end.

It is believed that the suspects had made a U-turn and in their bid to escape, inadvertently rammed into the oncoming car, throwing both men off the bike.

The impact of the fall immediately killed one of the suspects while his accomplice was seriously injured.

The deceased's trousers were ripped to shreds. One of his testicles was found stuck on the front of the car.
