Settle your traffic fines at RTD offices

Traffic offenders will be able to settle traffic summonses issued by the police and Road Transport Department (RTD) at offices of either department soon.

Road Transport Department director-general Datuk Solah Mat Hassan said today from March 15, traffic summonses issued by the police can be settled at RTD offices.

And as of April 15, summonses issued by the RTD can also be payable at the traffic police offices.

Solah said the new compound rates for traffic offences, effective March 1, was an incentive for
offenders to settle their summonses and settle them early.

Its primary intention is to encourage traffic users to be disciplined respect the law and follow traffic rules, not to collect money from the people, he said.

"Don’t think we are trying to make money. The important element here is not revenue. That is not our concern. But, when you commit an offence, you have to pay, you have to settle it. That’s the law.

"Just like when we have eaten in a restaurant, we have to pay after that," he told a press
conference to explain the new rates announced by Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha yesterday.

Solah said the decision to come up with the new rate was not only made by the RTD but also approved by a road traffic committee chaired by Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Mohd Sidek Hassan
recently.

On another matter, Solah said the government will not extend the Feb 28 deadline for motorists to settle their traffic summonses, failing which they will be blacklisted.

As at Feb 3, a total 13.43% of summonses issued from 2000 to 2009 valued at RM371 million have been settled from May last year.

The total number of summonses issued from 2000 until 2009 was 20,964,361, valued at RM3.5 billion.

Of this, 18,269,413 summonses were issued by the police (RM3.2 billion), 692,803 by the RTD (RM104 million) and 2,002,145 by the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (RM200 million).
