300 homeless as workers’ hostel goes up in smoke

A workers’ hostel was reduced to ashes when a fire broke out at a rubber glove factory in Batu Belah, near here.

Three people were injured in the 9.30am fire which left about 300 foreign workers homeless yesterday.

Two workers were admitted to the Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital here for serious burns while a third victim was given outpatient treatment

Several boxes of latex gloves were destroyed when the flames spread to a warehouse.

A factory worker, who declined to be named, said the company had not estimated the losses yet.

“We could only try to save as many (latex glove) boxes as possible,” he said at the scene.

Firefighters said the cause of the fire was not known but factory workers at the scene said the blaze was believed to have started from their hostel kitchen and spread to the entire building.

A worker, who declined to be named, said they were caught off guard when the fire broke out.

“Some of us were sleeping and heard screams that the building was in flames,” he said, adding that he rushed out from the building and alerted his friends while running out.

Some workers were seen trying to salvage their belongings from the ravaged hostel while others helped the firemen to put out the flames.

Five fire engines from the Sungai Pinang, South Klang and Port Klang fire stations as well as a water tanker from Shah Alam, managed to bring the fire under control.

Sungai Pinang station chief Isa Bakar said they were alerted about the fire at 9.47am and immediately rushed to the scene.

“We managed to control the fire from spreading to a nearby housing area,” he said.
