Seven men were arrested for unruly behaviour during an illegal gathering in front of the United States embassy here yesterday to protest against alleged US interference in the Egyptian government's affairs.

They were among 2,000 people who took part in the demonstration to hand over a protest memorandum to the embassy.

The illegal gathering, which began at 2.30pm, was, however, dispersed by police about 20 minutes later.

Dang Wangi police chief Assistant Commissioner Zulkarnain Abdul Rahman said the seven were arrested "when they become aggressive".

"They started throwing bottles and other hard objects and refused to disperse after being told to do so."

They were taken to the district police headquarters.
