Suspect dies while being arrested


A 53-year-old suspect died while being apprehended by police in Jalan Barat, here, following a car chase.

Dang Wangi OCPD Asst Comm Zainuddin Ahmad said police patrol unit chased the suspect and an accomplice, who were in a Proton Waja, and caught up with them at around 12.15pm yesterday.

“There was a struggle. While they were apprehending the suspects, the 53-year-old fell unconscious. An ambulance was called to the scene and the man was pronounced dead at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital,” he said.

ACP Zainuddin said a post-mortem on the man showed no external or internal wounds and that all his organs were in good condition.

ACP Zainuddin said two reports were lodged over the incident, one by a family member of the deceased and the other by the officer who made the arrest.

“This matter has been explained to the family of the deceased by doctors who performed the post-mortem. The family members have claimed the body.

This is the second recent case of a death during a police arrest.

Security guard C. Sugumar died after allegedly being beaten up by police and the public after he ran amok in Taman Sri Nanding, Hulu Langat, on Jan 23.

An initial post-mortem performed on Sugumar showed that he died of a heart attack.
