Najib: Govt will uphold Islam

This includes protecting the use of the word 'Allah', says PM

KUALA SELANGOR: THE government will continue to uphold Islam and protect its sanctity, including protecting the use of the word "Allah" with the mandate given by the people.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said although Barisan Nasional had failed to take over several states under Pakatan rule, including Selangor, the government would do its best for the people and ensure a holistic development would be carried out, as called for in Islam.

"We will provide more education opportunities, including in the Islamic field, more places of worship and better facilities for the people," he said after performing terawih prayers with the people at Masjid Jamiur Ridhuan in Simpang 4, Jeram here last night.

Najib said Malaysians continued to live in peace and harmony because the government had always chosen the middle path and moderation, and rejected extremism.

"Malaysia is peaceful, unlike in North Africa and the Middle East, because we choose the middle path and moderation, which are the best ways according to Islam.

"We reject extremist and fanatical beliefs, those who wreak havoc and create chaos in the country.

"If we are inclusive and reject unfair policies and fanatical beliefs, Allah will bless our struggle and leadership. This is what I will do with your mandate."

Earlier, Najib broke fast with the people, as well as Selangor BN and community leaders at the mosque.

Present were Selangor BN liaison committee deputy chairman Datuk Seri Noh Omar and Selangor BN assemblymen and members of parliament, including Amiruddin Setro, Abdul Shukur Idrus, Jakiran Jacomah, Budiman Mohd Zohdi and Datuk Irmohizam Ibrahim.

Najib presented aid to committee members of all mosques and surau in Selangor in the form of materials for robes, dates, zamzam water and sarong in conjunction with the national launch of aid for all mosques in the country.

More than 2,000 residents of Kuala Selangor broke fast and performed terawih prayers with Najib.

At the same time, Najib urged all Muslims, regardless of political belief, to observe Ramadan by performing worship in a spirit of togetherness.

"Political differences should not be the cause of extreme conflict. We must all look for common ground so that Muslims remain united and we can take the country to greater heights."
