A spurned lover was believed to have stabbed a young engineer to death after she allegedly turned down his proposal for marriage on Monday night.

The suspect, a cook, in his 50s, later surrendered himself to police about 1.30am yesterday, about two hours after the alleged stabbing. He also handed over a bloodstained kitchen knife to the police.

Ratna Sufizzahriyanti Omar, 23, from Kampung Balik Bukit in Pendang, near here, was stabbed several times with a kitchen knife at a house, rented by the suspect, in Taman Mahkota here.

She succumbed on the spot to multiple stab wounds in the abdomen, hands and chest in the 11pm incident.

The victim, a Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia graduate, was employed as an engineer by a factory in Gurun, near here, since eight months ago.

It was learnt that she and the suspect had known each other for about six years.

Kota Star district police chief ACP Adzaman Mohd Jan said the victim's body was found in a pool of blood in one of the rooms inside the house.

"The suspect was accompanied by his employer when he surrendered himself at the Kota Star district police headquarters here.

"The suspect, from Johor, also brought along the weapon used during the murder before leading the police to the scene."

Police said investigations would be conducted under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

Efforts to get comments from the victims' parents proved futile when they politely turned down requests from reporters when met at the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital's mortuary here. However, a close relative, who requested anonymity, said the family was worried about Ratna after she failed to return home on Monday.

"Ratna drove from her house to Gurun everyday and would usually return home about 7pm.

"The family was shocked when they were informed about her death by police about 3.30am," she said.
