Former model's autistic son goes missing

The eldest son of former part-time model Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno was believed to have fallen into Sungai Perak yesterday.

Muhammad Azfar Muhammad Affandi, 9, who suffers from mild cerebral palsy, autism and hyperactivity, went missing from his maternal grandfather's riverfront chalet in Jawang near here at noon.

Kartika, 34, said she was preparing lunch in the kitchen while her son and his cousins were watching television in the hall.

The cousins went to the kitchen, leaving Azfar alone. When they came to look for him, he was nowhere to be found.



Kartika said: "My son loves playing in the water but we never allowed him to go to the river. He may have walked off into the woods."

In 2009, the mother of two made headlines worldwide when she was sentenced to be caned by the Kuantan Syariah High Court for drinking alcohol in public, but the sultan of Pahang commuted the sentence to three weeks' community service.


Kartika said she and her children had been staying at the chalet for the past month as she was planning to start a renovation project.

"I had planned to send my son to a special school in Johor."

Shukarno Abdul Mutalib, 62, said his grandson loved to play hide and seek and expressed hope that the boy would be found. "We've searched all his favourite hiding spots."
