Emotional testimony in Teoh Beng Hock inquiry

"He was the man I would be with for the rest of my life. I have taken him as my future."

It was an emotional testimony from Soh Cher Wei, 30, who took the stand today as the 66th witness in the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) into the death of Teoh Beng Hock.

Soh broke down when questioned by Commissioner Dr Mohamed Hatta Shaharom on her relationship with Teoh, with whom she had been engaged to marry.

"He was a good person. He loved me," she said, after Hatta asked her what she liked about Teoh.

She said they never had the chance to name their child after they found out she was pregnant early July last year. Their wedding dinner had also been booked for Oct 3, 2009.

Asked by conducting officer Awang Armadajaya Awang Mahmud on Teoh's character, she said he loved his family very much. "He would talk about his family a lot, and he would call his mother everyday. He would go back to his hometown every week," she said.

Soh and Teoh first met when they were housemates in Kajang in 2005, when he worked as a reporter. They became a couple in 2007.

She said he enjoyed cooking, and his cooking was better than hers.

She described him as not easily angered, adding that he never reacted when she scolded him. "It was always me who got angry, but only for a short while. He would watch my mood and keep silent."

Soh said he almost never spoke to her about his work, or about politics, even though he was normally talkative.

"He would talk about work only to cancel dinner if he worked late, and I would jokingly complain that he works too hard but it was never serious or angry," she said, adding that Teoh's relationship with Seri Kembangan assemblyman Ean Yong Hian Wah, for whom he was political secretary, was normal.

Teoh also never complained about Ean Yong.

The last time she spoke to Teoh was three days before the incident. "He behaved normally," she said, adding that she never saw him deep in thought or conflicted.

The next witness, Teoh's father, Teoh Leong Hwee, 63, said he was rarely at home when his son visited their family home in Malacca due to his job as a taxi driver and that they rarely spoke to each other.

He was unaware that Soh was pregnant when he and his wife met with Soh's parents to discuss the wedding, four days before Teoh's death.

Teoh was found dead on the fifth floor of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission office in Plaza Masalam Shah Alam on July 16, 2009, after he had been called in to the Selangor MACC offices on the 14th floor of the building on July 15.

Teoh was called in as a witness to investigations into the alleged misuse of funds by Ean Yong.

The hearing continues.
