PKR banks on women power

Three women are set to fill all three places for PKR when the new Selangor executive council takes its oath of office today.

They include first-term Sementa assemblyman Dr Daroyah Alwi, a dentist.

The other two are Elizabeth Wong (Bukit Lanjan) and Rodziah Ismail (Batu Tiga), who defended their respective state seats at the recent general election.

Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim, also a PKR nominee, was appointed Mentri Besar for a second term on May 14.

The other woman likely to be in his team is Selat Kelang assemblyman Dr Halimah Ali, from PAS.

A lot of haggling was reported to have taken place before all three parties in the Pakatan Rakyat agreed on their candidates for the exco line-up, which will now also consist of three representatives from DAP and four from PAS.

A lot of haggling was reported to have taken place before all three parties in the Pakatan Rakyat agreed on their candidates for the exco line-up, which will now also consist of three representatives from DAP and four from PAS.

DAP had reportedly announced earlier that two of its representatives would be former assembly speaker Datuk Teng Chang Khim and Seri Kembangan assemblyman Ean Yong Hian Wah.

It is understood that their other representative is first-term Kota Alam Shah assemblyman V. Ganabatirao.

Aside from Dr Halimah, the other PAS representatives in the team are said to be Iskandar Samad (Cempaka), Dr Ahmad Yunus Hairi (Sijangkang) and religious teacher Sallehen Mukhyi (Sabak).

All 10 assemblymen were seen entering the Istana Alam Shah yesterday, for a rehearsal of the swearing-in that will take place at the palace today.

Ganabatirao was the first to arrive at the palace gates, about 30 minutes ahead of Rodziah and Wong, the last to arrive at around 10.30am.

Khalid, while helming the state as mentri besar, is expected to take charge of the Land Development and Finance committee.

Among his PKR colleagues, Dr Daroyah will be given the Health portfolio, while Rodziah (Welfare) and Wong (Environment) continue with the portfolios they held in the last term.

Dr Halimah, the other woman in the team, is expected to head the state Education committee.

Other portfolios for PAS are Housing for Iskandar, Youth and Sports for Dr Ahmad Yunos and Islamic Affairs for Sallehan.

Amog the DAP representatives, Teng will take up Trade and Investment and Ean Yong retains New Villages Development. Ganabatirao, a former Shah Alam city councillor, is speculated to take on the Local Government portfolio.

DAP, which had Teng as the speaker in the last term, is expected to appoint another person from the party to hold the post this time around.

It is learned the nominees include Hannah Yeoh (Subang Jaya), Lau Weng San (Kampung Tunku) and Ng Suee Lim (Sekinchan), all of whom were said to have been also in the exco candidates’ list.

As for the deputy speaker’s position, Taman Medan assemblyman Haniza Talha, from PKR, is expected to retain the position. There is also talk his party colleague Nik Nazmi Ahmad (Seri Setia) might replace him.
