Copies of Opposition tabloids seized for violating permit



Some 3,000 copies of tabloids published by the Opposition parties have been seized in a nationwide operation for violating the printing permit.

Home Ministry officials have so far seized 1,408 copies of Suara Keadilan, 1,602 copies of Harakah and 70 copies of The Rocket.

The seizure was made on Wednesday and more copies are expected to be seized as it is an ongoing operation.

The Home Ministry in a statement said the seizure was made under Section 5 of the Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984 (Amendment) 2012 for breach of the print conditions.

“The operation was carried out at premises selling the tabloids nationwide after taking into account the monitoring efforts and warning given by the ministry.

“It will be carried out continuously for the purpose of enforcing the Act and to ensure that all quarters do not violate it,” added the statement.

Suara Keadilan, Harakah, and The Rocket are news organs for Parti Keadilan Rakyat, PAS and DAP ,respectively.

Harakah editor Zulkifli Sulong confirmed that copies of the tabloid have been seized at several places nationwide.

According to Harakah's online news site, HarakahDaily, the copies were seized in Malacca, Negri Sembilan, Kedah and Perak.

The paper's marketing manager Ahmad Faisal Tawang said copies confiscated were today's edition, dated May 24-26; which featured the frontpage headline “GST hadiah BN untuk rakyat” (GST is BN's gift to the rakyat).
