Don’t expect to see DAP’s candidate for the Sibu by-election Wong Ho Leng on walkabouts or any real campaigns until nomination day on Saturday.
The Sarawak DAP chairman, who is also Bukit Assek assemblyman, is not worried that his opponent from Barisan Nasional, Robert Lau Hui Yew, has got a head start on him.
Wong, a seasoned politician, said he was not making his rounds yet in adherence to the election rules.
“I am following the law set by the Election Commission and will only do my campaigning after filing my nomination papers on May 8,” he said.
Wong, nevertheless, has been making his presence felt through frequent press conferences with his other party members.
Wong had contested in Sibu in the 2008 general election, where he garnered 15,746 votes but lost to the late Datuk Robert Lau Hoi Chew by 3,549 votes.
Hoi Chew, former Deputy Transport Minister, passed away on April 9, necessitating the by-election.
In contrast, Wong’s opponent, Hui Yew, has been on regular walkabouts in public places and attending dinners for the past two weeks.
Hui Yew is the Sibu Sarawak United People’s Party assistant treasurer and a councillor of the Sibu Municipal Council.
Meanwhile, Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Ahmad Maslan told reporters yesterday that the Barisan government would approve projects requested by the people even if they were made through opposition parties.
