Court Dismisses Anwar's Aplication To Strike Out Chandra's Defence an academician and Just World Movement president Dr Chandra Muzaffar's defence in a RM10 million defamation suit.

The High Court here today dismissed an application by opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to strike out academician and Just World Movement president Dr Chandra Muzaffar's defence in a RM10 million defamation suit.

Judicial Commissioner Datin Zabariah Mohd Yusof dismissed the application with cost after hearing submissions from both side in chambers.

Chandra's counsel, Jahaberdeen Mohamed Yunoss, told reporters that Zabariah held that the case should go for full trial in the interest of justice.



She fixed May 12 for case management.

Anwar was represented by counsel Wan Anuwar Shaddat.

On Mac 16, Anwar filed the application as Chandra had filed further particulars in his statement of defence out of time.

Anwar sued Dr Chandra on Mac 6, 2008, over his alleged defamatory remarks at a forum at Menara Star in Petaling Jaya on March 3, 2008, which were subsequently published in newspapers.

In his statement of defence, Dr Chandra Muzaffar denied having uttered malicious, false or defamatory comments about Anwar, which the Opposition leader claimed was published in two local English newspapers on March 5, 2008.

Alternatively, he claimed that if the words were defamatory, which he denied, then they were published on an occasion of qualified privilege without malice.
