GENTING BUS TRAGEDY UPDATE: Post mortem on 30 bodies, done - Dead passengers identified




Police have identified at least 15 passengers who were among 37 killed in the Genting bus crash near the Chin Swee Temple yesterday.

Bentong district deputy police chief Deputy Superintendent Wan Azharuddin Wan Ismail said police are still in the midst of ascertaining the identities of the remaining victims.

The tragedy, said to be the worst in the nation’s bus crashes, saw 16 other passengers, seriously injured.

Preliminary police investigations showed the bus was out of control for about 100 metres before it plunged into a 60m-deep ravine at KM 3.5 from the peak of the popular hill resort.

Pahang police chief Datuk Sharifuddin Ab Ghani said the bus had first hit the side of a hill before careening off the road.

As at 8.30am a total of 24 postmortems have been completed. 10 bodies have been identified and 6 have claimed family members.

Family members were seen waiting patiently around the Hospital Kuala Lumpur forensic area to identify and claim the bodies of their loved ones.


The Kuala Lumpur Hospital has carried out post-mortem on 30 bodies of bus passengers who were among 37 people killed in yesterday’s Genting bus crash.

The post-mortem on the remaining bodies is expected to be completed by noon today.

Out of the 30 bodies, 3 were foreigners - a Korean, a Bangladeshi with a Canadian passport and a Nepalese.
The remaining were Malaysians.

According to the Ministry of Health deputy director-general Datuk Dr. Jeyaindran Sinnadurai, all the deceased died of serious multiple injuries.

"All the 16 injured victims are in stable condition at the hospitals while three are still in the Intensive Care Unit of the Selayang Hospital," he said.

Dr Jeyaindran added that hospital team and staff from Sug Buloh Hospital, Kuala Lumpur Hospital, Bentong and Selayang were doing their level best to treat the injured passengers.

Meanwhile, family members of six people whose bodies were placed at the HKL mortuary, including that of the bus driver, Lim Kok Hoe, 43, had claimed their remains.

Lim's body was claimed by his mother and son, Lim Dei Sen 20.



“According to information from the Central Pahang Omnibus Berhad (the operator of the bus), the ill-fated bus with registration plate WGA 4136 was to carry 48 passengers. However, it was carrying more than the number of passengers,” he said.

Meanwhile, checks by the New Straits Times showed a team comprising 15 policemen and six Fire and Rescue Department personnel were at the accident scene to assess the situation and find ways on how to remove the wrecked bus.

The team used a hexicopter to get a better view of the accident spot.

Wan Azharuddin said they had yet to determine on the method to be used to remove the wreckage.

“The team is gathering input to design a plan to remove the bus.

“We will continue to check the area for possible bodies or passengers.”

“At the same time, we will also bring out and salvage all passengers’ belongings found at the scene,” he said.

A “crash team” from the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros) was also seen conducting inspection at the spot.
