Children watched as father assaults mother in a lift



Two small children were caught in a nightmarish situation when their father started beating up their mother in the lift of a private hospital here after an argument.

The incident was recorded on CCTV and went viral on the Internet after it was uploaded on several social networking sites, including Facebook and YouTube.

In the three-minute clip uploaded on Monday by the woman’s younger brother, the burly man is seen repeatedly slapping and punching his tudung-clad wife while their two children watched helplessly.

One of the kids, a five-year-old girl, even pleaded for her father to stop but her requests were ignored.

At one point, the woman’s tudung (headscarf) came off as the man continued to rain punches on her.

The video, which has since been viewed more than 3,300 times on YouTube and even shared on Facebook, ended with the man kicking his wife out of the lift while he remained inside with the children.

It has since been removed by YouTube as it violates YouTube's policy on shocking and disguting content.

Following the incident on Monday, the woman and her younger brother went to the police station and immediately lodged a police report over the assault.

The woman’s brother had on Facebook thanked all who had shared the video for their concern, as he believed it was because the video that had went viral that had spurred the police into action.

The police had since launched a manhunt for the man who is from Bukit Mertajam but is a civil servant working in Jerantut, Pahang.

Penang CID Chief Senior Asst Comm Mazlan Kesah said they are now hunting for the 36-year-old man to assist in investigations into the case.

He said it is not right to resort to violence even if the couple is having personal or marital problems.

“Now that it has become a police case due to criminal force being used, we will investigate the matter and take action against the culprit,” he said.

Mazlan said the couple were at the hospital in Seberang Perai to visit their eldest child who was warded there due to high fever.

He said the 36-year-old woman had received outpatient treatment in the same hospital with injuries on her head, face and wrists.

The police also issued an Interim Protection Order (IPO) to stop the husband from going anywhere near his wife.

The police is investigating the case under Section 323 of the Penal Code for causing hurt which carries a maximum sentence of up to one year’s jail or RM2,000 fine or both upon conviction.
