Four states still suffering from flooding

The four states struck by floods remain struggling with the situation as of this evening, with Sarawak topping the evacuee numbers.

20 relief centres are temporarily housing 7,592 victims, Bernama Online reported.

The state’s flood operations room spokesman said in Kuching that 20 low-lying areas were hardest hit with floods, the result of a combination of heavy rains and rising tides the past three days.

Kuching’s Kampung Simpok 1,610 residents have been afflicted as have residents in Samarahan’s Sadong Jaya (1,302), Sibu’s Ulu Balingian (424) and Sri Aman’s Pantu (74).

He expects flood victims to increase in the coming days.

Over in Sabah’s Sandakan Municipal Council’s flood operations room, a spokesman said evacuees at relief centres total 351 this evening from 194 in the morning.

He said 101 Kampung Gum-Gum families have been placed at Dewan Sri Gum-Gum.

In Beluran, Paitan’s Kampung Pinampadan is waterlogged but no residents requiring evacuation.

Residents in Kampung Tangkarason, Tanjung Nipis and Simpangan are on evacuation alert if the main river’s water levels approach the danger point.

In Rompin, there is a drop in those at relief centres, in a fairly unchanged 567 people from 619 in the morning.

Rompin police headquarters flood operations room’s spokesman said the Dewan Teluk Gading operation as a relief centre ended at 3.30pm when 52 victims returned home.

However 430 are still staying at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Pianggu and another 137 at SK Sarang Tiong.

He said high-tide is forcing them to remain at the shelters.

Kampung Sarang Tiong, Kampung Pianggu, Kampung Setajam and Kampung Garung were the affected villages.0

The number of flood victims has not altered much in Johor with 1,177 at the centres.

The National Security Council’s website stated they were at 17 relief centres; eight of which were in Segamat, six in Mersing and three in Batu Pahat.

Some positive news filtered in with vehicles being able to access the road to Kampung Orang Asli Peta in the Endau Rompin National Park once again.
