Umi Hafilda's RM100mil defamation suit struck out

The High Court has struck out a RM100mil defamation suit filed by businesswoman Umi Hafilda Ali against businessman Nor Azman Abdullah and Mkini Dotcom Sdn Bhd.

Justice Zabariah Mohd Yusof struck out the case in chambers, after counsels for both parties failed to appear for the first case management Wednesday.

Umi Hafilda, on March 17 this year, filed the suit against the two defendants over alleged defamatory statements published by the online portal two days earlier.

In her statement of claim, she alleged that Nor Azman @ Baginda Minda had uttered slanderous statements against her in a press conference held at the Parliament lobby on March 15.

She claimed the statements by Nor Azman, published by the Malaysiakini news portal later the same day, portrayed her as an immoral, scandalous and cheap woman, a liar, and an untrustworthy person.

Umi Haflida was one of the main witnesses in Anwar's sodomy trial in 1998.
