Wee slams bad translation

Lost in translation: The offending backdrop during the welcoming ceremony for Wen at Putrajaya.

Deputy Education Minister Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong has criticised the inaccurate translation on a backdrop during a ceremony to welcome Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and his entourage in Putrajaya on Thursday.

Describing the translation as nonsensical, he stressed that it did not reflect the quality of the Chinese language in Malaysia.

“The standard of our Chinese language is way above the inaccurate translation,” he said when asked to comment on the words in Chinese printed on the backdrop which was apparently a direct translation of the sentence Istiadat Sambutan Rasmi Sempena Lawatan Rasmi TYT Wen Jiabao Ke Malaysia.

The backdrop with serious syntax and grammatical errors was put up at a stage in front of the Prime Minister’s Department.
