Four family members on their way to celebrate their grandfather's birthday were killed when their car hit a lorry at 63km Jalan Kuantan-Segamat near Paloh Hinai early today.

They have been identified as Diong Kah Keng, 24, his wife, Koh Kiah Hui, 23, his brother Diong Kah How, 21, and their relative, Choi Kok Sin, 23.

Pekan police chief Supt Yahaya Othman said the four were in a convoy with other family members to attend their grandfather's 81st birthday party in Kuantan when the accident occurred at about 4.50am.

Police found the car pinned under the lorry.

Yahaya said the fire and rescue squad spent almost two hours extricating the victims from the wrecked car. The bodies were sent to the Pekan hospital for post-mortem.

The lorry driver escaped unhurt, but had yet to lodge a police report, he said.

Meanwhile, Kah Keng and Kah How's mother, Ong Yuet Lian, 43, said the convoy left Johor Baru at about 1am.

She said that she was leading the convoy in another car and was not aware of the accident until she was informed by her youngest child, Diong Kah Sian, 15, who was trailing his brother's car.
