Assault of pupil serious crime: Muhyiddin

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has described as serious the incident in which a religious teacher allegedly assaulted a seven-year-old pupil who later succumbed to his injuries.

Muhyiddin, who is also Education Minister, said although the school where the alleged incident took place was not under the ministry’s jurisdiction, such incidents cannot be left unchecked.

“I view seriously any incidents in schools, whether these schools are in or outside the national education system. This is a serious crime and the authority should investigate it. It is the responsibility of teachers and the school to ensure the safety pupils,” he said.

Saiful Syazani Saiful Sapfidee, a pupil at a private religious school in Arau, Perlis, died on Sunday after he was admitted to the hospital allegedly after being assaulted by a 26-year-old hostel warden.

The boy succumbed to internal bleeding and heart complications.

Muhyiddin said religious schools should have a standard guideline in managing discipline among students.

These schools, he said, should determine who should be responsible in handling disciplinary matters, including liaising with the authorities should there be a need to do so.
