Sodomy II: Defence may call Najib and Rosmah as witnesses

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's lawyers want to call Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor as witnesses should defence be called in the Opposition leader's sodomy trial.

Karpal Singh told reporters after the trial was adjourned Thursday that calling Najib and Rosmah to testify in court could be necessary if Anwar was ordered to present his defence.

Earlier, Solicitor-General II Datuk Mohd Yusof Zainal Abiden, in wrapping up the prosecution's case, told the court they had called 27 witnesses and were offering 73 witnesses - including Najib and Rosmah - to the defence.

The prosecution wrapped up their case after succeeding in tendering a white toothbrush, a 'Good Morning' towel and a mineral water bottle as evidence.

This came after the High Court dismissed the Opposition leader's application earlier in the morning to review the court's decision on Wednesday in allowing the items as evidence in the trial.

Justice Mohd Zabidin Mohd Diah ruled that there was no grounds for accepting the review application.

Following the ruling, the prosecution then called chemist Nor Aidora Saedon from the Chemistry Department, and head of police forensic lab in Cheras Supt Hamidon Adnan, to tender the evidence in court.

Nor Aidora had previously testified that the DNA profile taken from these items matched that of an unknown person known as Male Y, whose semen was found inside complainant Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan's anus.

Supt Hamidon was the one who collected the items from Anwar's lock-up cell.

Justice Mohd Zabidin then fixed April 18 to hear submissions from both parties, allowing them three weeks to prepare their submissions.

Anwar, 63, is charged with sodomising Mohd Saiful in a Bukit Damansara condominium here on June 26, 2008.
