Heavy rain since Monday night has caused flooding in several areas in the state, forcing the evacuation of 218 people early Tuesday.

They comprise 200 people from Kampung Tok Jembal here and 18 from Kampung Kubu in Marang, near here, a spokesman of the National Security Council said when contacted.

He added that the flood victims were now placed at Sekolah Kebangsaan Tok Jembal, here, and in Sekolah Kebangsaan Marang and Kampung Kubu community hall in Marang.

School sessions were not affected.

Meanwhile, Km14 of Jalan Kuala Terengganu-Kuala Berang in Kampung Bukit Payong was closed to light vehicles since early today due to the flood. In KUALA LUMPUR, the Malaysian Meteorological Department, in a statement issued at 11am Tuesday, forecast heavy rain in several areas in Terengganu, Kedah and Perlis until Wednesday.

Among the areas affected are Besut, Setiu, Hulu Terengganu, Kuala Terengganu, Marang, Dungun and Kemaman in Terengganu and Langkawi, Kubang Pasu, Padang Terap, Kota Setar, Pokok Sena and Pendang in Kedah.

The department said the condition could cause flash floods.

Meanwhile, heavy rain and strong winds slammed three districts in Kedah late Monday evening, uprooting trees and damaging over 150 houses.

Initial report from the Welfare Department showed Kuala Kedah to be the worst hit district with about 100 houses destroyed, followed by 30 houses in Alor Setar and 21 Pokok Sena.

No loss of life was reported.

Assistant officer of the Kota Setar Welfare Department, Rusmini Meh, said officers from the department were now at the affected areas to survey the damage and obtaining details of the victims for the purpose of providing assistance," he told Bernama when contacted.

Kuala Kedah Umno deputy division chief Datuk Abdul Mutalib Haron, members of the Federal Village Security and Development Committee, and Welfare Department staff were at Kuala Kedah until midnight Monday night to provide assistance to the victims.
