Government backs down in Alkitab row ahead of Sarawak polls
The Najib administration relented today to demands from the Church not to attach serial numbers to impounded Malay-language Bibles as it prepares itself to face a Christian-majority electorate in Sarawak in the coming state polls.
It also promised that all future shipments of such holy books written in the national language would be released as long as they sported the words “For Christianity” in the Arial font, size 16, either printed at source or stamped at the receiving port.
For the consignment of 35,100 Alkitabs still held in Port Klang and Kuching Port, the administration said it was willing to provide “stickers” to cover the present stamps and serial numbers already marked on the books.

Anwar Sex Tape Scandal Hishammuddin to sue Anwar
Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein has appointed a lawyer to institute legal action against PKR leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for accusing him and the police of being behind a sex video recently exposed by three Datuks.
It is learnt that he has appointed Tan Sri Cecil Abraham of law firm Zul Rafique and Partners to undertake the case.
Hishammuddin’s press secretary Nik Ahmad Khusairi Nik Ibrahim, who confirmed the engagement of the lawyer, said the suit is expected to be filed tomorrow.
Asked whether the suit is on his own capacity or on behalf of the police, Nik Ahmad Khusairi said it has yet to be decided as the minister is awaiting the lawyer’s advice on this.
“But, most probably it is on his own capacity as home minister and as Hishammuddin ... most probably he is not going to involve the police force,” Nik Ahmad Khusairi said.
A week ago the sex video of a man said to resemble Anwar and a woman was shown to a selected group of editors and journalists at the Carcosa Seri Negara by a man who went by the name “Datuk T”.

Sarawak polls on April 16?
Attention has shifted to the likely dates for polling and nomination in the 10th Sarawak election following yesterday’s dissolution of the state assembly.
A favourite date among pundits and politicians is April 16, a Saturday, preceded by the nomination process speculated for either April 6 or 9.
Election Commission chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof will chair a special meeting here tomorrow to discuss matters pertaining to the state election, including the nomination and polling dates.
Of particular interest would be the duration of the campaign period.
The April 6 and 16 combination gives a 10-day campaign period while the April 9 nomination would reduce this to seven days.
The Election Commission had in the 2006 state polls decided on a 11-day campaign period.
Datuk Seri Idris Jala on the Bibles issue
The following is the media statement issued by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Senator Datuk Seri Idris Jala on the bibles issue:
"The Government wish to reiterate that since March 15, it had given the directive to release all Bibles in Bahasa Malaysia, which are impounded in Port Klang and Kuching. However, to date the Christian groups who imported the Bibles have not yet collected them because they did not accept the stamps and the serialisation of these Bibles.
Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, the Minister of Home Affairs mentioned that the act of stamping and serialisation is standard protocol; for example, Qurans which are imported into the country are also checked as authorised copies and are stamped with serial numbers before they are released. Qurans which are not authorised are impounded and destroyed. The act of stamping and serialisation of the Bibles in Bahasa Malaysia and the Qurans should not be perceived as desecration of Holy scriptures. Attached is a copy of the stamp and the serialisation as they appear of the Quran.
