Consumer rebates for greener appliances

The government is expected to introduce rebates for refrigerators, air-conditioners and chillers for qualified consumers to improve energy efficiency in the country.

Under the initiative, qualified consumers will be given a rebate of RM200 for a new refrigerator and RM100 for an air-conditioner. Both are household items while the chillers are for commercial use and an announcement on the rebate for it will be made on July 7.

This was stated by the Energy, Green Technology and Water Ministry, secretary general, Datuk Loo Took Gee at the ETP Progress Update Six here today.

This government-funded initiative is part of the SAVE or Sustainability Achieved via Energy Efficiency (SAVE) programme under the Economic Transformation Programme, to improve energy efficiency in Malaysia through five initiatives. It will cost the government RM50.2 million in 2011.

SAVE will be implemented through the collaboration between the Ministry and utility companies, Tenaga Nasional Bhd, Sarawak Electricity Bhd and Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd as well as the participating appliance manufacturing companies.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak announced today nine new initiatives under the ETP which will bring in RM2.77 billion in investments, with a Gross National Income (GNI) impact of RM18.67 billion and 36,595 new jobs by 2020.
