Taib launches BN manifesto for Sarawak

Barisan Nasional Thursday unveiled its manifesto for the Sarawak election, addressing nine key areas of concern with a theme "Secure Your Future With BN".

Chief Minister and State BN chairman Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud launched the manifesto at a meet-the-people session at MUC Hall here.

The manifesto asserts that BN:

1. PRESERVES and promotes peace, harmony, stability, and good governance of the state,

2. PRESERVES the environment, culture, heritage and beliefs of all races,

3. CREATES enough job opportunities for everyone,

4. CREATES more business opportunities for all,

5. PROVIDES the best education opportunities,

6. GUARANTEES people's rights over their land,

7. CARES for and improves the quality of life of the poor and the less fortunate,

8. ENSURES that the standard of roads, water and electricity supply, health services and housing in the state is continuously improved,

9. HAS the plan that will ensure Sarawak is on track to become the richest state in Malaysia.

BN is the first to unveil a manifesto for the April 16 polls.

The DAP and Parti Keadilan Rakyat are due to launch their manifestos jointly Friday in Sibu.

The BN manifesto in Bahasa Malaysia, English, Iban and Chinese carries a foreword by Taib which outlines what the coalition has achieved and what it wants to continue delivering in the coming years.

The manifesto is accompanied by a booklet, also in the four languages, that details the BN thrust in the key areas.

The booklet titled "Together We Transform Sarawak: People First, Performance Now" covers good governance, environmental management, business and job opportunities in the Sarawak Corridor of Renewal Energy, education, land lease renewals and land rights, among other topics.

The booklet also explains National Key Results Area initiatives and BN government efforts to alleviate poverty and provide assistance to the less fortunate.

It elaborates on efforts to check increase in the price of goods and services and reduce the impact on the people.

Also present at the unveiling were the Chief Minister's wife, Datuk Amar Ragad Kurdi Taib, State Minister of Land Development Datuk Seri Dr James Jemut Masing, State Finance Minister Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh, Minister in the Chief Minister's office Datin Fatimah Abdullah and the candidate for Nangka, Dr Annuar Rapaee.

Taib told reporters later that BN had been transforming the state, and that "no other party can do that, much less PKR".

He said that BN candidates were selected from among those who can form an effective government to ensure a secure future.

Masing, approached by the media, said the manifesto was prepared by BN component parties and was very detailed.

"It will tell the world what we have. This will counter all allegations against us," he said

Asked why not all leaders of BN component parties were present, Masing, who is Parti Rakyat Sarawak president, said this was due to time constraints.

"This is the only time when he (Taib) is free while the other party leaders are everywhere now. Sibu is being used as the venue not for any other reason," he said.

Fatimah said the government was aware of what it took to implement the promises made in the manifesto, especially in education.

"We have proven that we can deliver on our promises even in remote areas, and it is up to the people to return the BN government (to power) so that more development can be delivered to them," she said.
