Surprise raid on 'mini casino'

A 'mini casino' in Jalan PJS 8/4, Sunway Mentari was raided last night by city police's secret societies, vice and gambling unit (D7).

Police officers, posing as customers, entered the shoplot and saw online roulette betting activities in progress.

DSP Izwan Abd Karim from the Selangor police headquarters, who headed the two-hour operation, said two officers entered the premise as customers to see if gambling activities were going on.

"There were five customers, aged between 24 and 45 gambling at that time. The premises were protected by closed-circuit television cameras.

"They mainly allow in regular customers and their friends. If the operators suspected our presence, they would have moved their online games server to another server to hide their gambling sites. Doing this would have taken them a few seconds."

Izwan said his team had been observing the premise for the past week, adding the place had been raided before.

"The operators were taken aback when police flashed their identification cards. We raided the place last year. Now, they were back at it again. We will check if the operators we detained last year are also the ones behind this den."

A total of 24 computers were seized, together with RM964 in cash believed to have been proceeds from bets placed. The five customers were detained for questioning and later released.

The operator remains in police custody.
