Cops checking Ahmad Sarbani's handphone

Police are checking on the telephone calls Selangor Customs Department assistant director Ahmad Sarbani Mohamed had made and received prior to his death at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) building here on Wednesday.

Kuala Lumpur CID chief SAC II Datuk Ku Chin Wah said police have in their possession Ahmad Sarbani's handphone which was found by investigators on the first floor of the MACC building on Jalan Cochrane following his death.

It is believed that among other things, police are trying to ascertain if Ahmad had gone to see MACC investigators on his own accord or had been summoned by them.

The MACC had claimed that Ahmad Sarbani had gone to its office on his own accord as he had wanted to amend a statement he had earlier given following his arrest.

However, several customs officers had told the media in the wake of Ahmad Sarbani's death that he had told them he had been summoned by the MACC to their office again.

It is learnt that police are also viewing the recordings of several closed-circuit cameras (CCTV) which they had obtained from the building.

Since the incident, 18 people including Ahmad's family members and MACC officials have had their statements recorded by police who are working around the clock on the case.

Ahmad had been among 62 customs personnel who were detained and later released on bail by the MACC on suspicion on involvement in bribery and money laundering as part of a crackdown on the customs department by a special task force.

He was found sprawled face down on a badminton court on the first floor of the MACC headquarters, about two hours after he arrived at the place to meet the investigating officer handling his case.

He is believed to have fallen from the third floor of the four-storey building and sustained serious head injuries.

Police said a post mortem conducted by Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (HUKM) on Thursday found the injuries sustained by the victim was consistent with a fall from the building.

However, investigators can only be sure of this after they receive the results of other forensics and chemistry tests later this week.
