IPOH: The Perak Customs Department scored its biggest firecracker and fireworks bust this year with the seizure of more than RM700,000 of the banned items.

The raids were carried out at separate locations in Penang and Taiping on July 5 and 17 respectively.

State Customs director Ab Hamid Salleh said all the seized goods, worth RM777,595.50, including unpaid duties of RM306,325.50, were believed to be for the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

Hamid said further investigations indicated that the contents of the containers had been declared in the manifest as furniture.

He said no arrests had been made and investigations were ongoing to identify those responsible for bringing in the firecrackers and fireworks from China.

In another case, Hamid said enforcement officers from the Ipoh branch nabbed two local men in their 20s and 40s and seized firecrackers and fireworks worth RM20,170 after inspecting a lorry at Jalan Ipoh-Butterworth near the Taiping Utara toll plaza on July 17 at 11.40pm.
