MCA president calls for EGM

Ong is betting his political career on his own EGM.

Barisan Nasional Backbenchers Club chairman Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing alleged that alleged RM10 million donation to Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat was handed over in three cash installments of RM5 million, RM1 million and RM4 million, the as China Press reported .

MCA party sectary General Datuk WOng Foon Meng confirmed EGM is going to be held within 30 days.

MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat has instructed party secretary-general Datuk Wong Foon Meng to convene an emergency general meeting (EGM) within 30 days.

Wong, when contacted, confirmed he received Ong's instructions Monday morning."Based on Article 30.1 of the party constitution, the president can call for an EGM," said Wong.

Ong's directive preempts moves by Dr Chua's supporters to gather enough signatures from delegates to convene an EGM seeking to nullify Dr Chua's expulsion and reinstate him as deputy president, and pass a no-confidence vote against Ong.

Ong Tee Keat Controversial
MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat has filed a RM500mil defamation suit against Barisan Nasional Backbenchers Club chairman Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing over the latter’s claim that he gave RM10mil to the minister. The suit was motivated by Tiong’s allegation that he had “donated” RM10mil to Ong.Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing got shares in Kuala Dimension who is deep shit over the Port Klang Free Zone expose . Dimension is one of the 12 companies being investigated for the 1.5 billion wrong claims on the project.

Ong’s lawsuit against Tiong may drag on for years before a judgment can be made against the real culprit. The intention was clear. The allegation was made to discredit Ong and to allow his detractors to build up a strong resistance against his leadership.

His nemesis was hoping that MCA leaders at the division level who believed that he took the RM10mil might become upset with him for pocketing the money. The lawsuit will become purely academic if Ong does not survive the onslaught from within and without his party.

Then lately MCA President influence the centre committe to fire and sack Dr Chua the VP of MCA for the previous sex scandal when Dr Chua was taped to have sex in a hotel. But why now sack him , after 18 months after the events. Many feel Dr Chua is punished twice for the same events. Many believe this is Ong method to distract people from the Port Klang issue and method to strength his hold on MCA head. Sacking the VP , will only split the MCA more.

We must be clear that Ong is merely doing his job to investigate the PKFZ financial fiasco which is threatening to cast a dark cloud over the country. Without his commitment to dig deep into the issue, it would not have been possible for us to find out that there may be a potential breach of financial integrity which led to an over-billing of RM500mil to RM1bil.On the PKFZ, Ong has obviously risked it all.

Many of us may not agree with MCA’s insistence to continue working with some dubious politicians or the party’s lack of a clear stand on certain political issues. But we must not discount the fact that Ong’s good work to honour his commitment to account for the PKFZ fiasco is both admirable and commendable.

Will Ong survive in his own party? Will Ong survive in the next election?

Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing’s alleged RM10 million donation to Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat was handed over in three cash installments of RM5 million, RM1 million and RM4 million, the China Press as reported .

The Chinese-language daily said the details were obtained from a copy of the police report made by Tiong against Ong last week.

Although he has denied taking RM10 million, Ong has admitted to taking free rides on private jets owned by Kuala Dimensi Sdn Bhd (KDSB), the company owned by Tiong.

KDSB was the company being probed in relation to the scandal-hit Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ) when Ong took rides on the company aircraft.

Ong is betting his political career on his own EGM and hopes to galvanise enough support to remain as party president even as he continues to come under siege from within and outside the MCA.

It is understood his EGM will have two main agendas — to justify his decision to sack Dr Chua and to garner support for his disclosures in the scandal-hit Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ) project.

But supporters of Dr Chua are also currently collecting signatures to also call an EGM to remove him as party president, and they hope to convene their meeting in September.

The latest two-EGM scenario looks set to lead MCA on a path of self-destruction, with the party split down the middle.

Ong’s EGM gambit is fraught with risk.

With significant numbers in his party in an angry mood, the EGM could end badly for him, with a no-confidence vote against his leadership.

Ong is using the PKFZ issue as a confidence vote in his leadership.

But the PKFZ scandal has been the one issue which has seen him suffer major blows to his own credibility.

PKFZ contractor Kuala Dimensi Sdn Bhd’s (KDSB) CEO Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing has alleged Ong took a RM10 million cash donation from him last year.

While Ong has filed a RM500 million suit against Tiong, his colleague in Barisan Nasional (BN), the latter has continued attacking Ong.

Ong’s supporters are claiming that Tiong’s attacks are a result of disclosures of wrongdoing by Ong’s Transport Ministry against KDSB in an ongoing probe on PKFZ.

The Dr Chua EGM seeks to reinstate him as deputy president and to pass a vote of no-confidence against Ong.

BN leaders, especially from Umno, are watching developments closely and are unhappy that Ong had pushed his party crisis to the brink by sacking Dr Chua.

Dr Chua was expelled from the party last week for tarnishing MCA’s image over a secretly recorded video of him in bed with his mistress that was distributed publicly in late 2007 by his political rivals.

He subsequently resigned from party posts and as a Cabinet minister, but last October he made a comeback to win the MCA deputy presidency.

Since then Ong had grown insecure and was uncomfortable with Dr Chua, with the two barely on speaking terms.

By dredging up the old sex scandal, Ong was hoping to remove Dr Chua from the scene even as he took on Tiong and KDSB.

But with Umno unhappy with his actions, Ong is now facing a fight for his political life.

The family of the late Teoh Beng Hock condemned the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for claiming in the coroner's court last week that the DAP political aide had received “kickbacks”.

Mohd Anuar, under questioning from the MACC lawyer, Datuk Abdul Razak Musa, told the coroner's court on Aug 26 that Teoh had personally received money from a private company totalling RM112.

The other lawyers, from the Teoh family lawyer Gobind Singh Deo to the lawyer from the Attorney-General's Chambers assisting the coroner, Tan Hock Chuan, objected strongly to Abdul Razak's line of questioning.

Teoh's boss, first-term Selangor DAP executive councillor Ean Yong Hian Wah who sat in when Mohd Anuar testified, has reassured Teoh's family that the claim is “totally baseless” and that he has all the documents to prove his innocence.

The RM112, Ean Yong told them, is a refund for an earlier payment for a banner.

But Lee Lan said: “The damage has been done.”

On behalf of her family, she demanded that the MACC show proof to back up its allegation immediately, or publicly apologise to the family for defaming her deceased brother.

“Proof is needed for truth and justice to prevail,” she said.

“To make a serious allegation against a person who cannot defend himself is malicious and is totally unacceptable,” she added.

The 28-year-old auditor from Alor Gajah repeated her plea for anyone with information on her brother's death to step forward and pass the details to Gobind.

‘Torture’ used at MACC office

Khalid claimed that the brother of Shah Alam Umno division chief Datuk Ahmad Nawawi was one of the two men who were caught on video carrying the cow head.

Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad has blamed Umno for the shocking display of bigotry two days ago, saying the brother of the local Umno chief was one of those carrying the cow’s head to protest relocating a Hindu temple.

The PAS man’s allegation comes in the wake of accusations by other Pakatan Rakyat leaders that Umno is trying to destabilise the state government by using race baiting tactics such as painting the Malay-Muslim community as under siege from non Malays.

A group, claiming to be Muslim residents of Section 23 in Shah Alam, the new site of the temple which is to be relocated, held a demonstration outside the Selangor state secretariat, dragging a severed cow-head, an animal sacred in Hinduism, which they stomped and spat under the gaze of the riot police.

He cited the actions of Datuk Noh Omar, the Umno state deputy liaison chairman and Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister, as the catalyst for the residents’ recent inflammatory protest. Noh had made at least one visit to the proposed temple site in August and told the media that he would seek an injunction to stop the relocation adding that the Selangor government was going against the Federal Constitution by ignoring the sensitivities of Muslims, who make up the majority of residents in Section 23.

Asked about some residents who claimed that he had lied to them, Khalid replied that he had in fact not lied when he ran for election saying that he had always insisted on being fair, including to the Hindus even though they were a minority.

“They have rights too,” he said, pointing out that the 150 year old temple was not relocated earlier when PKNS had developed a housing area all around it and that there is only one temple for Indians living in Sections 19, 20 and 23.

“They don’t have a right to reject a Hindu temple. Their right to have a surau has been fulfilled. Hindus also have a right to have a temple for the 3 sections and we also want to fulfil that right.

“The Hindus also don’t have the right to reject a surau and each community has a right to have a place if worship. We have fulfilled the right of the Muslims,” he said.

“If the temple was placed in their backyard or smack in the middle of their community, I can understand if it feels awkward. But now it is far from their houses. There is no infringing on rights of Muslims. I take into account distances. They assume too much and feel they have more rights than what they have,” the PAS leader added.

He added it was not true that the state government was not willing to meet residents and when he met them in June, the requisite approvals for the relocation were still pending from PKNS, the owner of the land, the Shah Alam city council and the state government itself.

He also said that he will attend a meeting between the state government and residents on Sept 5 to discuss the burning issue.

“We are willing to listen to reason but the reasons must be sound. However, I don’t think we will entertain racist or prejudiced views.

“We should condemn prejudices and move to be more tolerant. There is a lesson to be learnt otherwise there will be another round of racist talks, speeches and acts. It’s unfortunate that after 52 years of independence, this is the kind of situation we have,” he said.

Umno has often been accused by Pakatan of trying to use race, religion and other tactics to frustrate the Selangor state government. Just weeks after Pakatan swept into power in Selangor last year, some Muslim residents in Kuala Langat made an issue over a centralised pig farm, a project that was actually mooted by the former Barisan Nasional state government.

Most recently, a controversy erupted over the aggressiveness of the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission (MACC) in wanting to grill Pakatan Selangor state lawmakers while former mentri besar, Datuk Seri Khir Toyo who has been accused of corruption over the cost of his palatial Balinese style mansion, has not been probed.

The controversy took an ugly turn when Teoh Beng Hock, a DAP political aide! Was found dead just outside the MACC headquarters in Shah Alam on July 16 after he was brought in for questioning.

Khalid delivered a parting shot at MACC, referring to comments by Section 23 residents action committee chairperson Mahyuddin Manaf, who said he was mystified by the appearance of the cow head at the protest.

“There are a lot of mysteries in Shah Alam. Nobody knows how Teoh Beng Hock died. If you ask MACC, they will probably say that the cow committed suicide,” he quipped.
