Worker injured as platform collapses

MAJOR MISHAP: A section of the collapsed first floor of the shopping complex under construction opposite KL Sentral

Part of a building under construction opposite KL Sentral collapsed yesterday, injuring a worker.

Brickfields police chief ACP Wan Abdul Bari Wan Abdul Khalid said the 35-year-old man fell from about four metres while working on the Nu Sentral building.

"The victim was carrying out plastering works on the first floor of the 11-storey building before the four metre-high platform gave way around 10.30am. Fortunately, he wore a hard hat and he only passed out," Wan Abdul Bari told reporters at the scene.

He said the platform was believed to have just been plastered and had not fully dried when it collapsed.

He said the victim suffered external injuries and was rushed to University Malaya Medical Centre where he received outpatient treatment.

Work on that level had been temporarily stopped until further notice from the Department of Occupational Safety and Health, he added.

Building developer Malaysian Resources Corporation Berhad (MRCB) corporate communications senior manager, Hasnol Abdul Hadi, said: "The first-floor platform collapsed as the newly applied cement base hadn't fully dried."

He added: "All safety procedures were adhered to as the workers were well equipped with safety gear, as required by local safety standards."

Hasnol said MRCB had bought the land in 2009 to build a seven-floor shopping complex plus a four-floor parking area that would be completed next year.

An investigation is underway by the police and MRCB.
