No compromise for traitors in Malaysia - ISA detention for 7 immigration officers involved in human trafficking

Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein today warned civil servants of severe action if they put the country's security at risk in attempts to gain riches for themselves.

Referring to the seven immigration officers who were detained under the Internal Security Act (ISA) three days ago for allegedly working in cahoots with international human trafficking syndicates, he said the government will not compromise on those who betrayed the country with devious plots to gain wealth.

He said the ISA was invoked on the men as the matter involved national security.

"I wish to remind all officers and staff who are entrusted with safeguarding all entry points of the country to carry out their duties and responsibilities with integrity. Do not betray the country to pursue material wealth.

"There will be no compromise for those who betray the country regardless of which department they are from.

"I view this seriously as it affects the security of the country and affects our image. It can also be a threat to the region and our neighbouring countries," he said at a press conference at the federal police headquarters.

Hishammuddin said the alleged offences by the detained immigration officers were serious and dangerous.

He said the authorities had kept watch on such activities over time before arresting the officers as well as two Indonesian men.

Asked if the men will be charged in court for the offences, he said this would be done in a closed court in due time as the police were still gathering information and evidence from the suspects.

Earlier, Hishammuddin met an Australian government delegation led by its Minister of Immigration and Citizenship Chris Bowen and police top brass to discuss matters concerning the security of both countries and the region.

"We spoke on our bilateral relationship, transnational crimes and other issues on security. It was a good meeting," he said.

Bowen described the relationship between Australia and Malaysia as one of the best in the world.

"The meeting was very productive and we spoke on joint efforts in overcoming various security issues. Our ties with Malaysia is first class and we intend to enhance this further. Australia appreciates Malaysia's commitment in tackling various issues." he said.
