Police have picked up a suspect in connection with the dramatic robbery and assault of a 25-year-old woman, an incident that went viral after she posted her harrowing experience at a basement mall carpark on Facebook.
In the incident on Sunday at the Curve, Mutiara Damansara, B2 carpark, Chin Xin Ci (pic) said she jumped off her moving car after a struggle with two men.
Chin wrote that the motive for the attack could be kidnap.
One of the men also made sexual advances towards her and she feared she would be raped.
The case generated wide interest as it brought back memories of Canny Ong who was abducted at the Bangsar Shopping Complex, raped and murdered in June 2003.
Police said one of the suspects was nabbed on Monday and were looking for an accomplice.
Curve centre manager Jazmi Kamarudin said the closed-circuit television footage of the incident was handed over to the police.
Petaling Jaya deputy police chief Supt Meor Hamdan Meor Mohamad said Chin suffered minor injuries on both hands.
He said police recorded a statement from her after she lodged a report.
“We will look into claims of kidnap and attempted rape by the victim.”
Meor Hamdan said the case was being investigated under Section 394 of Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt during a robbery.
Chin’s nightmare began when she was placing her shopping bags on the back seat when a man slammed the rear door against her back about 5.25pm.
The man covered her mouth with his hand and pressed a meat cleaver against her throat.
He then shoved her onto the floor of rear seat and warned her not to scream.
The second man then appeared and grabbed her car keys. He ordered her to hand over the parking ticket before taking over the wheel.
She was forced to lie on the floorboard head down while the car exited the boomgate.
On exiting, Chin struggled to escape by elbowing, kicking and biting the two men.
After about five minutes, she managed to free herself and jumped out of the moving car.
She ran towards a crowd at the mall entrance and sought help before collapsing at the feet of a man.
