Strong quake strikes Banda Acheh, dozens injured



Dozens of people have been injured after a 6.2-magnitude quake jolted Aceh Province in the northern tip of Sumatra Island of Indonesia today, said local officials.

"There are dozens of people wounded here," Fauzi, head of local disaster management and mitigation agency in Benermeriah of Aceh Province, told China's Xinhua news agency via telephone from Benermeriah.

The quake struck at 14:37 p.m. Jakarta time (0737 GMT) with epicenter at 35 km southwest Benermeriah district of the province and with a depth of 10 km, Subagio, an official of the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency told Xinhua by phone.

Thumbs up for swift move

EXCEPT for a few hiccups, residents of Kota Kuala Muda gave the thumbs-up to government agencies which sprung into action when tremors shook the fishing settlement on Wednesday.

Siti Minah Mahmud said she was very thankful to members of the Civil Defence Department for moving her bedridden husband to safer grounds swiftly.

"I panicked when the tremors hit our village and the first thing that came to mind was my husband's safety," said the 62-year-old housewife, whose house in Kampung Kepala Jalan near here was among five villages flattened by tidal waves when a tsunami, caused by a 9-magnitude earthquake off Sumatera, hit the settlement on Dec 26, 2004.

Tremors jolt Penangites - Indonesia hit by 6.6 Richter earthquake



Hundreds of residents from high-rise buildings ran out of their homes following tremors after a 6.6-magnitude earthquake jolted the western Indonesian island of Sumatra.

Among the affected people here were those living in Weld Quay, Macallum Street, Tanjung Bungah, Tanjung Tokong, Gurney Drive, Lintang P. Ramlee, Sungai Nibong and Bandar Baru Air Itam.

Penang Fire and Rescue Department assistant director (operations) Mohd Razam Taja Rahim said the department received 16 reports about the tremors.

Two quakes hit Sumatra, tremors felt in S'gor, Malacca, Perak, NS, Putrajaya, KL

Two earthquakes hit northern Sumatra Tuesday morning sending tremors that were felt in Selangor, Malacca, Negri Sembilan, Perak, Putrajaya and here.

The first 5.5-magnitude earthquake hit Sumatra at 8.08am and the second 5.6-magnitude quake hit the same place at 11.01am Tuesday.


Calls came pouring in from Selayang Hospital, KLCC building and other highrises in the Klang Valley as many residents ran out of their buildings

However, there was no tsunami threat, said the Malaysian Meteorological Department.

Information about damage or casualties has yet to come in.


Sumatran quake tremors felt in Malaysia



An earthquake of 5.5 magnitude on the Richter scale struck northern Sumatra, Indonesia today, and tremors were felt in as far as the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia.

A Malaysian Meteorological Department statement said the quake occurred at 8.08am (Malaysian time) and its epicentre was 330km southwest of Klang, Selangor. Tremors were reportedly felt in Malacca, Selangor and southern Perak

The Fire and Rescue Department in Shah Alam, when contacted, said it received a call regarding a tremor at the Selangor State Secretariat building at 8.29am

Five more Malaysians missing in Christchurch earthquake

SEARCH CONTINUES: Rescue workers continuing their hunt for survivors at the Christchurch Cathedral this morning

Five more Malaysians. including a family-of-four, are the latest reported missing following the earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand, on Tuesday.

Malaysian operations room chief Ayauf Bachi in the city told The Malay Mail this morning that the fifth missing
person was a man, bringing the total to six.

The first Malaysian reported missing was a woman from Sarawak in her 30s who worked at a private company in Christchurch.

Bachi said efforts were being made to visit areas where the five Malaysians were believed to have been to in order to gather more information.

“We are going to Avonside, an eastern suburb in Christchurch, where the family-of-four and the man were believed to have travelled to before the quake.”

Quake tremors rock Penang

No quiet Sunday: Penangites standing outside a shopping complex after feeling tremors from an earthquake off Aceh province in Sumatra yesterday.

Tremors from an earthquake that struck off Aceh province in Sumatra rocked several parts of the island as Penangites were enjoying a leisurely Sunday.

The shocks lasting several seconds caused anxious callers to deluge with enquiries.
