NRD plans automatic registration of births

The National Registration Department plans to eliminate the problem of late registration of births by introducing automatic registration the moment a child is born in hospital.

Deputy Home Minister Datuk Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said this would be done as parents still delayed registering their offspring.

He said automatic registration would come into effect soon throughout the country, with the exception of Sabah, where the Royal Commission of Inquiry on illegal immigrants was ongoing.

Wan Junaidi said although the problemwas not as prevalent as before, it still existed.

“There are some parents who would pack up their things and go home immediately after their child was born in hospital.

Everyone must register their children within 42 days of birth,” he said after paying a courtesy call on Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud at Wisma Bapa Malaysia here yesterday.

A 65-year-old hawker, who has never been outside the country, is in a fix after the National Registration Department (NRD) clai-med that he had renounced his citizenship and is now a Singaporean.

H’ng Yu Choon, from Penang found that the NRD did not recognise him as a Malaysian anymore when his application for the Bantuan Rakyat 1Malaysia (BR1M) last year was rejected due a problem with his MyKad.

The National Registration Department (NRD) yesterday rolled out the new MyKad, which uses the latest laser technology and security features.

NRD director-general Datuk Jariah Mohd Said said the new MyKad was being issued at NRD offices here and in Shah Alam, while NRD offices in other states would follow suit starting Feb 15.

Made of polycarbonate for strong resistance and embedded with a chip, she said the new MyKad has a ghost image of the identification card holder to curb forgery.

Paperless Malaysians flock to get their ICs

Thousands flocked to the National Registration Department (NRD) offices in several states to fulfil their life-long dream of getting a MyKad under the MyDaftar campaign.

MyDaftar is an effort by the NRD to identify individuals who had birth certificates but had not applied for a MyKad, and those who did not have birth certificates and thus, unable to secure a MyKad.

Sixty-one NRD offices set up special counters yesterday under the MyDaftar campaign to address documentation problems involving the Indian community, many of whom faced difficulties in obtaining a MyKad despite being born in the country.

Organised by the Special Implementation Taskforce on the Indian Community in collaboration with the Home Ministry, the campaign will register Indians who do not have relevant documents pertaining to their birth, identification and citizenship.

The National Registration Department's (NRD) new marriage registration procedure does not require couples intending to get married to appear for the second time at the NRD office but to choose a place convenient to them to register their marriage.

Its spokesman said the new procedure introduced on April 1 stipulated that couples must appear for the first time at the NRD to register their marriage and could then appear at the NRD or before the assistant registrar of marriages at the temple or church after their registration form had been validated by the NRD.
