Director admits Tanda Putera a work of fiction, defends controversial scenes

The director of the controversial film Tanda Putera, which has upset the opposition, now admits it is a fictional account of events surrounding the May 13 racial riots.

Datin Paduka Shuhaimi Baba said her film is an interpretation of historical events derived from multiple opinions.

She explained that after certain parties strongly objected to a scene where a character urinated at a flagpole in front of the house of a former Selangor menteri besar, she edited the scene to tone it down.

“I made some slight edits of the scene. There were words that I removed. That scene was acted out according to those who were present at that time.

“I had to make sure I could fit in most of the opinions collected into a two-hour movie. Of course, not all of the responses we got could be enacted in the film.

“She tried to cut herself,” said the source, requesting anonymity, adding:

“She really feels like she needs her father... she had been in treatment once before for depression, so this is kind of like a real cry for help.” “She’s in good condition, she’s not in critical condition.” A sheriff’s spokesman told AFP officers had responded to a home in Calabasas near Los Angeles, where Jackson lives, over a “medical situation,” but refused to confirm the identity of the person taken to hospital.

jOINING THE WINNING TEAM: Afdlin (left) and Harun display their membership forms at the party's headquarters in PWTC

Afdlin Shauki, one of Malaysia's most versatile and popular artistes, yesterday joined Umno in an attempt to be more proactive towards the community after being a lifelong supporter of the
party.

"I have been voting for the party in all my years as a registered voter but I'm old enough now to contribute politically," said the Pappadom director, who had just turned 40.

Afdlin had also previously made a brief appearance in the Jodie Foster starrer Anna and The King and from the Buli and Sumolah fame said artistes should be more politically aware.

"I think artistes ought to have a stronger voice when it comes to politics. In countries like India and USA, artistes have a big say in determining election results. Similarly, artistes here too should have a voice," he said.

Afdlin however conceded he might lose a few followers due to his move to join Umno.

"I am aware that I could alienate some of my followers because they are also supporters of other parties.

But if they really follow me, they could understand the reason for my decision," he added.

Where is Anita Sarawak? The veteran singer has seemingly ‘disappeared’ without a trace and friends are worried. Is she sulking or facing personal problems?

 Anita Sarawak

When Anita Sarawak was caught for close proximity (khalwat) 16 years ago with her third ex-husband J.D.Nicholson, (her fiance then) she handled the issue like a true professional.

Not only did she attend hearing in court and paid the fine, she also appeared on stage several hours later to fulfil and honour her singing engagement.

That time, she was slated to give five performances at the Petaling Jaya Hilton over three days. I happened to catch the show the evening after Anita was caught. Anita had been up almost all night talking to religious officials and she attended the hearing the following day immediately after her afternoon performance.

It was close to 5pm when everything was finally settled. Anita barely had a wink of a sleep.

Yet, she came back to perform that evening. After opening the show with her usual fast numbers complete with slick moves and choreography, Anita asked the audience how they were doing.

Pay P. Ramlee’s kin some of the millions, Shaw Bros urged

Home of the legend: A group visiting Rumah P. Ramlee in Penang.

Although Shaw Brothers is raking in millions of ringgit for television rights to the late Tan Sri P. Ramlee's movies, none of his family members have been paid royalties.

Lawyer Datuk Hamzah Mohd Kassim, who is representing the legendary filmmaker and songwriter's grandchildren, said it was only appropriate that a certain amount be paid to the family members as token payment.

“This, despite the ambiguity in legal provision when it comes to the entitlement of royalty payment for films made several decades ago,” he said at a gallery next to Rumah P. Ramlee, the house where the late entertainment icon grew up.

Recently, it is learnt that a cross-media group with significant presence in DTH (Direct-To-Home) TV services, paid Shaw Brothers several millions of ringgit for the rights to air P. Ramlee movies over three years.

UK Britain Royal Family Wedding Photos.

Prince William and Kate Middleton married at Westminster Abbey yesterday in a sumptuous show of British pageantry that attracted a huge world audience and injected new life into the monarchy.

Before a flawless exchange of vows, a veiled Middleton wearing a laced dress with a long train, the first "commoner" to marry a prince in close proximity to the throne in more than 350 years, walked slowly through the 1,900-strong congregation.

As they met at the altar William, second in line to the throne, whispered to her, prompting a smile. The Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams declared the couple married with the words: "I pronounce that they be man and wife together."

Tens of thousands of people thronging the streets outside cheered when they heard the words, and again as the newly-weds left the abbey in a 1902 open-topped state landau carriage bound for Buckingham Palace, the queen's London residence.

Huge cheering crowds strained to catch a glimpse of the beaming couple as well as the military bands in black bearskin hats and cavalrymen in shining breastplates who escorted them to the palace.

Royalities and Celebrities rub shoulder in the events.

The net curtains of the Buckingham Palace balcony began twitching right at 1.23pm and then right on schedule, two minutes later, the world's most-watched newlyweds emerged, sparking huge cheers.

The rest of the royal family came out, although Queen Elizabeth II kept discreetly to one side -- this was her grandson's big day.
