Fire destroys seven squatter houses in Sentul market -

A fire destroyed at least seven squatter houses in Kampung Chubadak, Sentul Pasar, here last night, dealing a blow to the Aidilfitri celebrations of the occupants.

No one was injured in the fire, said the Sentul Fire and Rescue Station.

Firemen who rushed to the area after being summoned at 9.52 pm had much difficulty fighting the blaze as the houses were close to one another, resulting in the fire spreading fast, it said.

"We have yet to determine the exact number of houses destroyed or damaged. We are gathering the occupants, many of whom have returned to their villages to celebrate Aidilfitri," said station chief Zahari Mohamad.

Toy store gutted in fire

Firemen putting out a blaze that engulfed a toy store in Jalan Siow Loong Hin, Seremban on Saturday.


A toy store in Jalan Siow Loong Hin here caught fire on Saturday night.

However, no casualties were reported in the 9pm incident as the store was unoccupied at the time.

Owner Chai Ching Shin said he had closed the shop after turning off the main switch at 5:30pm before going home.

"I was shocked upon receiving a call from a former employee of mine, who told me that my store was ablaze," he said.

He estimated his losses at between RM300,000 to RM500,000.

The fire had razed both the shop's third and second storeys by the time Chai, who lives at Taman Bukit Kepayang, arrived at the scene.

A team of 26 firemen received an alert at 9.46pm, and arrived at the scene seven minutes later.

Energy drop at plant caused safety tripping to be activated

KUCHING: A SEVERE energy drop at the Bakun Hydroelectric Plant (HEP) has been identified as the main reason behind the massive power failure which plunged most of Sarawak into darkness on Thursday.

For nearly 10 hours, most major cities in the largest state was enveloped in darkness and thrown into chaos as public utility systems, such as street lights and traffic lights, failed to function.

Sarawak Energy Bhd (SEB) chief executive officer Torstein Dale Sjotveit yesterday said the problem originated from the Bakun HEP, which led to the shutdown of all power stations, including the Sejingkat, Batang Ai and Mukah coal plants, together with the Bintulu and Miri gas plants.

In apologising to those who had suffered from the blackout, Sjotveit said to protect the integrity of other generators in the system, the safety tripping was automatically activated, resulting in the shutdown of all other power stations in the grid.

Haze: Schools close in Manjung district as air quality turns hazardous

Schools in the Manjung district in Perak have closed due to the worsening air quality.

A SMJK Nan Hwa teacher, who declined to named, said schools in the district have been instructed by the district Education Department to close until further notice. .

"All schools will also be closed tomorrow (Wednesday)," she said.

The Air Pollutant Index (API) reading at 9am at Seri Manjung was 322, well into the hazardous zone.

Air quality in Perak started deteriorating in Perak as the haze drifted north.

Perak Education, Science, Environment and Green Technology Committee chairman Dr Muhammad Amin Zakaria said Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir was considering closing public premises.

"Normally, if the API exceeds 300, we will have to close public premises.

26 escape fire at old folks' home in Klang

Twenty six senior citizens and the disabled escaped a fiery death when the Klang Senior Citizen Association Home in Jalan Solok Tamarind, Southern Park here went up in flames on Friday night.

The residents were getting ready to watch a Hindustani movie when warden N. Yogarani, 61, noticed a fire had started at the dry goods storage at the back of the house.

Her son, N. Yogeswaran, 40, who is a supervisor at the home, tried to put out the fire with a fire extinguisher but it quickly got out of control.

"I could not put out the fire and it spread quickly because of the hot weather and strong winds.

"I quickly got the residents out with the help of neighbours," he said at the home yesterday.

"Luckily, they were all getting ready to watch a movie and were not in bed. They could be moved to safety quickly without anyone getting injured."

Fire razes 20 homes at Taman Ikan Emas in Cheras

More than a dozen families were made homeless after a fire razed 20 homes in a long house at Taman Ikan Emas in Cheras here.

The fire occurred at around 2.32pm and was believed to have originated from a vacant house there.

For R. Jivamalar, 38, the fire destroyed almost all her belongings and documents located on the top floor of her double-storey house which was undergoing renovations.

Explosion at UMT chancellory building caused roof to collapse

An explosion at the Universiti Malaysia Terengganu chancellory building at 11.30am caused security personnel to evacuate staff.

It is believed the explosion of an aircond unit on the third floor, at the vice chancellor's office, had caused part of the roof to collapse, said a security staff.

Three fire trucks from the state fire station arrived about 20 minutes later and deployed 16 personnel into the building.

At about 12.50pm, as an officer was about to make a statement to a group of waiting reporters at the building's frontyard, a series of small explosions broke, producing a thickening black smoke billowing from the building top.

AN arsonist and a mosquito coil are believed to have set off two fires that destroyed 26 cars and six motorcycles in Cheras and Setapak within four hours yesterday morning.

Six hours later, another fire in Segambut razed 50 squatter homes leaving 250 people homeless.

In the first incident, police said six motorcycles and a car were destroyed during the arson attack in Desa Sri Putri apartment at 3.30am on the first floor of the apartment car park.

Cheras police chief ACP Mohan Singh said the Salak Selatan police patrol was dispatched to the scene at the first floor of the apartment car park.

270 made homeless in fires

HUSMIATI Ali could only watch in horror as the house she called home for the last 19 years went up in smoke in Kampung Bahagia Tambahan in Segambut, here, yesterday.

The 38-year-old Indonesian was among 250 people who were left homeless after a fire razed 20 houses and 30 squatter homes in the noon blaze.

"I lost RM5,000 worth of jewellery which I had been keeping to take back home and some money, too," the distraught woman said.

She said that she and her 11 housemates heard about the fire while they were at work nearby and rushed home.

"I don't know what to do now."

Saiful Bahri, 18, said his family lost a sundry shop along with their home in the fire.

"I was at work when I heard about the fire.

Nine hours to put out warehouse fire

It took 70 firemen close to nine hours to put out a blaze at a furniture and groceries warehouse here yesterday.

The fire, which began at 12.40am, was first seen by a warehouse worker staying inside the premises.

It started at one end of the half-wooden and half-concrete building and quickly engulfed it.

The warehouse was formerly a rubber factory owned by Lian Hup Corporation Sdn Bhd.

A 61-year-old British consultant was injured in an explosion at his 17th floor condominium in Persiaran Hampshire, off Jalan Ampang, last night.

The blast shattered windows on the 17th and 16th floors of the Hampshire Park Condominium, sending shards of glass and chunks of concrete raining down on the ground, up to 200m away from the building. Even the windows of the nearby Corus Hotel were not spared.

Paul Christopher Lovell, who is attached to AET Tanker Holdings Sdn Bhd, was believed to have been badly injured and was warded in the intensive care unit of the Prince Court Hospital here.

300 homeless as workers’ hostel goes up in smoke

A workers’ hostel was reduced to ashes when a fire broke out at a rubber glove factory in Batu Belah, near here.

Three people were injured in the 9.30am fire which left about 300 foreign workers homeless yesterday.

A factory worker, who declined to be named, said the company had not estimated the losses yet.

Mum and child perish in fire

Flights disrupted at Kota Kinabalu airport due to small fire

A small fire and heavy smoke disrupted service at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport Air Traffic Control Service for some three hours which affected 19 flights.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha said after initial investigation revealed that the incident forced Air Traffic Control Centre (ATC) personnel to evacuate and leave their working positions in adherence to safety procedure.

20 Stalls At Chow Kit Market Go Up In Smoke

Some 20 stalls at the Chow Kit wet market here were razed in a fire that broke out at 9pm Monday.

However, no casualties were reported.

Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue assistant director (Operations) Azizan Ismail said firemen arrived within four minutes and put down the blaze about an hour later.

"The cause of the fire is still being investigated but a witness said he saw the fire start at stall selling frozen meat. While fighting the fire, a small explosion also came from a fridge at the stall.

"This led us (firemen) to take precautions against ammonia poisoning," he told reporters at the scene.

He added that the quick action by his men prevented the fire from spreading to 30 other stalls.

Losses were estimated to run in the thousands of ringgit.

Police detained a 35-year-old security guard after he accidentally fired a shot from his pump gun inside the Maybank premises in Jelutong yesterday.
The incident, which happened at 5pm, also slightly injured a female clerk's shoulder.

The guard caused a commotion when he fainted as he was about to be handcuffed and taken to the police station.

Acting district police chief Superintendent Gan Kong Meng confirmed the incident.

Dead 1 month old baby found stuffed inside toilet bowl.

In another incident, the body of an abandoned new-born baby girl was found stuffed inside a toilet bowl yesterday.

Southwest district police chief Superintendent Hatta Mohd Zain said a woman cleaner of a factory in Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone spotted the body at 2.30pm.

"The cleaner sensed something amiss in a toilet cubicle when she found the flush system jammed.

"She was shocked at seeing a pair of legs jutting out from the bottom of the toilet bowl." Hatta said.

He said the cleaner attempted to pull out the baby with her hands but the body was stuck.

Hatta said the cleaner then reported the incident to her supervisor and they alerted the Fire and Rescue Department. Firemen took nearly four hours to remove the dead baby from the toilet bowl.

"The firemen had to break the bowl with a sledgehammer to remove the body."

He said the baby girl was about a month old.

Hatta also said the police had arrested a 20-year-oldIndonesian factory worker whom they believed to be the baby's mother.

He said police were also on the trail of her accomplice, a compatriot of the suspect.
