Perkasa to rally against Catholic Church as ‘Allah’ case in swing

Perkasa and other Muslim groups said today they will demonstrate against the Catholic Church outside the Court of Appeal when the religious tussle over the Middle Eastern word for god heads back to the legal arena.


Catholic Arcbishop Tan Sri Murphy Pakiam should brace himself this Thursday should he decide to attend the court hearing to defend the Church’s right to use “Allah”.

Perkasa and other Muslim groups said today they will demonstrate against the Catholic Church outside the Court of Appeal when the religious tussle over the Middle Eastern word for god heads back to the legal arena.

Perkasa secretary-general Syed Hassan Syed Ali said the planned rally was in support of the Home Ministry in its efforts to prohibit non-Muslims from referring to God as “Allah” in print materials.

“The Court of Appeal’s decision in this case is very important to Muslims,” Syed Hassan said in a statement emailed to The Malay Mail Online.

“Perkasa also calls on other Muslims to join us at Putrajaya in great numbers this Thursday morning. Show our support towards efforts in defending the word “Allah” from being used and misused by other religious believers,” he added.

Perkasa threatens Umno again

For the second time in a week, Perkasa warned the government that they will lose the support of the Malays and Bumiputera if their demands are not met.

The Malay rights group expressed its anger that the government has fulfilled less than 15 per cent of its demands but had given in to the demands of groups representing other races.

Just last week, Perkasa president Datuk Ibrahim Ali warned the government that it risked losing the group's support if it continued to prioritise other races over the Malays.

"The patience of the Malay people also has a limit, do not push it," Ibrahim warned.

Yesterday, it was the turn of the group's general-secretary Syed Hassan Syed Ali, who said: "If the government continues to remain mum on the demands made by Perkasa, the communities whose rights we are championing may decide to shift their support elsewhere.

Forget reconciliation, says Perkasa chief, move on

Perkasa chief Datuk Ibrahim Ali has described the government's call for national reconciliation as an insult to the public's intelligence.

"The general election is over, those who won should be congratulated and those who lost should accept the result.

"There is no such thing as national reconciliation. It is just rhetoric," said the Malay rights group leader.

To stress his point, Ibrahim then quoted Napoleon: "Do what I asked you to do, not do as I do". He then urged the government to get on with the job of running the country.

"Those who talk the most are usually the most immoral and corrupt. There are the ones who say do not send your children abroad to study, do not go overseas on holiday, stay in Malaysia.

GE13: The Star refutes Tony Pua's allegation over DAP ad

The Star has run DAP advertisements on its radio stations 988 and Red FM but only a print advertisement for the newspaper was rejected because the party refused to put its logo on it.

According to a spokesman, a statement made by its DAP publicity chief Tony Pua had conveniently left out that the radio advertisements were accepted and aired.

He said the rejected print advertisement was not attributed to any individual or party or group.

The spokesman said Wednesday that the company was uneasy with the design of the print advertisement as it clearly violated the Malaysian Code of Advertising and Home Ministry guidelines.

The advertisement showed independent candidate Datuk Ibrahim Ali holding a keris with the words "a vote for MCA is a vote for Umno and Perkasa."

Perkasa rallies to ‘Save Selangor’ on April 6

Pertubuhan Pribumi Perkasa Malaysia (Perkasa) plans to hold the “Save Selangor” gathering on April 6 to close the programme with the general election closely approaching.

Its president, Datuk Ibrahim Ali, said the gathering was scheduled to start at 3pm on that day in Section 2, here.

He said this after chairing an organising committee meeting on the gathering, here, last night.

Ibrahim said former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad will be invited to speak at the gathering, which was expected to be attended by 15,000 to 20,000 people.

Perkasa wants Singapore envoys expelled over Bersih rally

Malay rights group Perkasa today demanded that Singapore withdraw three of its diplomats accused by local right-wing groups of being involved in the April 28 Bersih rally here despite the republic denying the charge.

Perkasa president Datuk Ibrahim Ali today led 300 supporters to submit a protest note to the Singapore High Commission at Jalan Tun Razak, in a move that appeared to be from an old playbook of using the republic as a bogeyman to unite the Malays.

Umno has previously targeted Singapore to rally Malays against perceived foreign threats, with Perkasa’s focus on Singapore — despite the presence of diplomats from other countries — suggesting a strategic move given the general antipathy here towards the republic.

Perkasa ‘congratulates’ Hasan Ali on being sacked from ‘hell’

Ibrahim today extended an invitation for Hasan Ali to join Perkasa.

Perkasa said today it had expected Datuk Hasan Ali’s dismissal from PAS, and congratulated the Selangor executive councillor on leaving the “group from hell”.

President of the Malay rights group Datuk Ibrahim Ali told a press conference that the Gombak Setia assemblyman was sacked following “pressure from DAP and PKR”.

“I congratulate Hasan who has left the group from hell. I already expected him to be sacked before the 901 gathering,” the Pasir Mas MP said, referring to the rally in support of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim who will learn the verdict for his sodomy trial tomorrow.

Hasan drew the ire of his colleagues this week when he said the rally was a waste of time, despite PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang already giving his backing for the event.

Perkasa: Charge people like Rev Eu with sedition

The authorities must charge those who question Article 153 of the Constitution like Christian leader Rev Dr Eu Hong Seng with sedition to safeguard national security, Datuk Ibrahim Ali said today.

“We demand the government use the Sedition Act on anyone who makes statements like this from now on and charge them in court,” the Perkasa chief told reporters today.

He was referring to a statement made on Saturday by National Evangelical Christian Fellowship (NECF) chairman Eu, who likened Article 153 to “bullying” for only protecting the rights of one group.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said today T-shirts with messages in support of Bersih have been outlawed because they were related to an illegal assembly.

“The Bersih T-shirt is related to an illegal assembly, then whatever they are wearing is illegal,” he told reporters.

Police officers have been arresting activists and opposition members wearing Bersih T-shirts ahead of next weekend’s rally and counter rallies organised by Umno Youth and Perkasa, all of which the government has said will not be given police permits.

However, the Bersih organisation has not been declared illegal nor has the word “Bersih” been gazetted as such.

Hishammuddin did not mention today under what law the T-shirts would be considered illegal.

PKR sees Emergency in Putrajaya bid to stop Bersih

PKR said today it expects the federal government to declare an Emergency in Kuala Lumpur as a last resort to stop the July 9 Bersih 2.0 public rally calling for electoral reforms.

Shuhaimi Shafiei, a member of PKR’s central leadership council, said the assessment was based on the move by the authorities in recent days to clamp down on plans for the rally through mass arrests of Bersih activists

“We expect them to use whatever means including declaring Emergency,” he told reporters at his party’s headquarters here today.

Shuhaimi, who is also PKR’s Selangor information chief, said he believed the recent police action pointed to plans by Putrajaya to declare Emergency.

“We are heading in that direction...this is a move by Putrajaya because they are scared of losing power.

“Nevertheless such actions will anger a public who are now aware of their rights,” he said.

Ambiga receives SMS death threat

Bersih chairman Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan has received a death threat via text message which was also sent this morning to reporters and some members of the Coalition for Free and Fair Elections (Bersih).

The text message warned Ambiga as well as PAS and PKR leaders from going ahead with the July 9 Bersih rally, and said her life would be in jeopardy should it (the rally) proceed.

Hisham promises to probe Ambiga death threat

Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said today that the police will investigate the death threats made against Bersih chairman Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan.

Hishamuddin (picture) said that the threat is very serious especially considering the circumstances.

“I am going to Bukit Aman immediately afterwards and will get the police to make sure that the SMSes that have been going around and where they originate from are not a threat. A lot of things go through SMSes. I get death threats too but in the circumstances of Bersih, we need to take this particular threat more seriously,” he told reporters in Parliament here.

The three groups planning to have separate rallies on July 9 were summoned to Bukit Aman police headquarters yesterday.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said the representatives of the three groups -- Coalition for Free and Fair Elections (Bersih 2.0), Umno Youth and Malay rights group Perkasa were called because they have insisted on having the rallies despite not having a police permit.

“I have already stated that immediate action must be taken on this matter and the PDRM (Royal Malaysian Police) will call all parties involved, because although we have said that we are not going to grant them permits, the
statements from Perkasa, Umno Youth and Bersih, indicate that they plan to proceed anyway,” he told reporters after attending a meeting in Parliament yesterday.

Hishammmuddin however declined to give details as to what would happen when the groups are at Bukit Aman.

The Home Ministry will flex its muscles ahead of the Bersih rally next month, announcing that organisers of all three assemblies will be hauled up by Bukit Aman today.

Perkasa kicked off its Bersih 2.0 counter-protest here in Kampung Baru today by burning images of Bersih chairman Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan and issuing a warning to the Chinese to stay indoors as “anything could happen”.

Perkasa Datuk Ibrahim Ali, who earlier appointed himself “war general”, said if electoral reform coalition Bersih goes through with its July 9 rally, he will not be held responsible for any untoward incidents which may occur.

“Imagine if chaos erupts. If the Bersih rally is not cancelled... I believe the Chinese community will have to stock up on food.

“Yes, anything can happen. And so I ask the police to act and use whatever powers are at their disposal,” he told some 500 supporters who gathered at Kelab Sultan Sulaiman here for the launch.

Datuk Ibrahim Ali’s “racist” remarks against the Chinese warning them against attending the upcoming Bersih rally is not reflective of all Malays, Khairy Jamaluddin has said.

The Perkasa president yesterday kicked off the Malay rights group’s counter-protest to Bersih 2.0 by burning images of Ambiga and warning the Chinese to stay indoors as “anything could happen.”

“I just want people to know, that this is the view of an MP who does not represent the majority of Malays.

“We are a noble race, we don’t subscribe to his view,” Khairy told reporters today.

Khairy called for action to be taken against Ibrahim.

“What he has said is very dangerous ... the least that can be done is an investigation for sedition,” said the Rembau MP.

Utusan Malaysia and Malay rights group Perkasa have accused Bersih of being an opposition tool to bring down the Barisan Nasional (BN) government through undemocratic means.
