Suspect admitted to the killing, says crime watcher

A community crime watcher said the man who last saw 15-year-old Ng Yuk Tim alive had confessed to killing her.

The 23-year-old suspect, who initially claimed that he had dropped the girl off at the Kelana Jaya LRT station at 2pm on Monday, had admitted that he lied, said Selangor Community Policing founder Kuan Chee Hong (pic).

He repeatedly questioned the man on what happened to the girl before he got the confession, Kuan told reporters after handing the suspect to the Petaling Jaya police.

Kuan added that the suspect confessed to trying to rape Ng in his house and had hit her with a dumbbell when she resisted.

Kuan said he met Yuk Tim’s mother at a restaurant in Kelana Jaya after she asked him to help her find her daughter.

DAP offers to help AGC convict ‘correct’ Altantuya killers -

The DAP legal bureau today offered its services to prosecutors in the high-profile murder of Mongolian Altantuya Shaariibuu, suggesting that an overworked Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) may have led to the acquittal of two former policemen previously convicted of the killing.

This comes as Segambut MP and bureau member Lim Lip Eng (picture) lodged a police report in Jinjang here over the Court of Appeal’s decision to free ex-police commandos Azilah Hadri and Sirul Azhar Umar of their conviction in 2009 of the gruesome murder.

“Give DAP legal bureau the fiat (authorisation order), we will make sure the correct person is prosecuted and convicted,” Lim said in a statement here.

PKR: Ex-cops should be re-tried for Altantuya murder, not acquitted

The Court of Appeal should have ordered a retrial of the high-profile murder of Mongolian Altantuya Shariibuu, instead of acquitting two former police commandos previously convicted of her killing, PKR’s R. Sivarasa said today.

The Subang MP stressed that the appellate court is empowered to do so, especially when there was a number of key witnesses who were not called during the High Court trial that led to the duo’s conviction in 2009.

“Even if the Court of Appeal found defects in the manner the High Court judge analysed the evidence and in the conduct of the prosecution in presenting the case, the proper order to make in this case was to order a retrial and not grant an acquittal,” Sivarasa told reporters here.

“There is ample power under the law in Section 60 of the Courts Judicature Act 1964 to order a retrial which is regularly done in appeals.”

In a decision that stirred controversy yesterday, a three-man panel of the appellate court unanimously ruled that Azilah Hadri and Sirul Azhar Umar be allowed to appeal their charges.

Man found dead with hands and legs bound

A man was found dead, with his hands and legs bound, and mouth covered with a piece of cloth in Menggatal, near here, yesterday. There were also wounds on his neck.

Police identified the deceased as Ibnu Panaharan, 29. They believed he was killed elsewhere before his body was dumped into some bushes. He had been dead less than 24 hours when his body was discovered at 7am.

His body was discovered by two policemen who were doing a background check on a multi-purpose vehicle that was abandoned by the road, near a water tank, at Kampung Binaung Baru.

City police chief Assistant Commissioner Jauteh Dikun said police had classified the case as murder. They believed more than one person was involved, he added.

Maid suspected of stealing dies in police station

A 42-year-old maid who was about to give her statement to the police after being accused of stealing from her employer collapsed and died at the Kampung Raja police station here at around 2.30pm today.

Acording to a source, the Indonesian maid from Java had been employed by a teacher in Kampung Seberang Jaya here since May 12 to look after his elderly mother.

However, the teacher suspected her of stealing after the family lost RM5,000.

The employer brought her along to the police station when he lodged a report at the Kampung Raja police station at 2.30pm.

Taxi driver in banker’s assassin hunt hit with firearms charges

Taxi driver Chew Siang Chee, arrested by police for allegedly transporting the hitman who killed banker Ahmad Hussain Najadi, today claimed trial to the possession of a firearm and ammunition at the Sessions Court here.

The 45-year-old was detained shortly after the assassination in which the founder of Arab-Malaysian Development Bank was gunned down in broad daylight while leaving the Kuan Yin Temple in Lorong Ceylon here on July 29.

According to a report by The Star, Chew pleaded not guilty to charges of possessing a pistol and four bullets under sections 8 and 8(a) of the Firearms Act.

Illegal possession of guns is punishable by imprisonment of up to 14 years and at least four strokes of the cane, while unlawfully having ammunition attracts a penalty of up to seven years’ jail and a fine of up to RM10,000.

More bullets fly in Penang, third man shot in 2 days

A 43-year-old man was shot at outside a night club in George Town, The Star Online reported today, becoming the third target of hitmen in Penang in the past two days.

The man, said to be an underworld leader in the state, survived the barrage of seven bullets with only one hitting him in the left thigh.

He was rushed to the Penang Hospital and is reportedly in a stable condition.

Citing unnamed sources, the news portal reported the victim, known only by his nickname Too Pek (Uncle Pig in the Hokkien dialect), was shot at by a man he had been speaking with earlier at an open car park near entertainment outlets in a mall in Jalan Datuk Keramat.

Police have recovered seven bullet casings and detained two foreigners who were said to have been on the scene attempting to clean up the evidence.

Arrests of 3 narrow down hunt for gunman

KUALA LUMPUR: POLICE have made a major breakthrough in the murder of Arab-Malaysian Banking Group's first managing director, Hussain Ahmad Najadi, following the arrest of three people.

Police believe that of the three suspects, one was with the killer when Hussain was gunned down.

City Criminal Investigation Department chief Datuk Ku Chin Wah said yesterday police had on Monday arrested a 42-year-old man and two women in separate locations in the city to assist in investigations.

"The male suspect surrendered himself at the Kuala Lumpur police contingent headquarters at 10pm yesterday after police failed to find the suspect in his house during a raid.

"He is believed to have been at the crime scene with the taxi driver and the shooter."

Post-mortem shows baby choked to death on milk

A post-mortem on a six-month-old girl who died at a nursery in Taman Impian Murni, Alma here yesterday, has confirmed the baby choked on milk.

Seberang Perai Tengah police chief ACP Azman Abd Lah said Bukit Mertajam Hospital staff found milk in the lungs of the baby, Cyndi Koay Xin Lin.

The case was classifed as sudden death, he said.

“At the moment, there is no criminal element in the baby’s death,” he said when contacted here today.

He said initial investigations revealed that Xin Lin was under the care of a woman, in her 40’s, who was an acquaintance of the deceased’s parents.

Body of missing woman in Kinabalu landslip found by special rescue unit

Search and Rescue team including firemen, policemen, JPAM and villagers searching for the victims at the landside scene.


The body of a 78-year-old grandmother who was buried in Tuesday’s landslip in Kundsang was recovered at 12.15pm on Wednesday.

A Fire and Rescue Services’s Special Technical Operation Rescue Malaysia (STORM) personnel recovered the body of Dohumie Kintie buried under a landslip at the remote Kg Masilau on the foothills of Mount Kinabalu.

The 21-member STORM team was brought in a 5am to carry out search and rescue operations for the woman who was reportedly in the area picking strawberries when the landslip occurred at around 10.45am on Tuesday.

A spokesman for the department in confirming the recovery of the body said further details would be released later.

Dohumie is believed to have taken shelter from a downpour in a hut that was hit by tonnes of rock and mud in the landslip.

Tan Sri has no regrets shooting parang-wielding man who attacked him

The gutsy Tan Sri who gunned down a parang-wielding robber said he had no regrets shooting the man as he tried to attack him twice.

Pahang Chinese Chamber of Commerce chairman Tan Sri Lam Kam Sang was having a medical check up at a Cheras polyclinic in Cheras when three men armed with parang burst in and demanded cash and valuables from the staff and patients.

“I have no regrets shooting dead the robber. He was very aggressive and threatened my life.

“I pumped three shots into him after he tried to slash me a second time. If I had not had my gun, it could have been me who would be dead," Lam said when contacted by The Star on Friday.

Suspect dies while being arrested

A 53-year-old suspect died while being apprehended by police in Jalan Barat, here, following a car chase.

Dang Wangi OCPD Asst Comm Zainuddin Ahmad said police patrol unit chased the suspect and an accomplice, who were in a Proton Waja, and caught up with them at around 12.15pm yesterday.

“There was a struggle. While they were apprehending the suspects, the 53-year-old fell unconscious. An ambulance was called to the scene and the man was pronounced dead at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital,” he said.

ACP Zainuddin said a post-mortem on the man showed no external or internal wounds and that all his organs were in good condition.

Couple gets 23 years for child abuse

The accused: Mohd Shazwan and Norazira being escorted to the Magistrate’s Court in Kuala Terengganu.

A couple was jailed a total of 23 years in prison for abusing three children belonging to the woman.

Mohd Shazwan Shaari, 26, and his wife Norazira Abas, 29, pleaded guilty after Deputy Public Prosecutor Masriwani Mahmud read the charges to them before Magistrate Rozianti Mohamed Hanaphi.

Mohd Shazwan, a labourer, was sentenced to 13 years in jail while his unemployed wife, Norazira, was jailed for 10 years.

The couple, who married 10 months ago, faced three charges of abuse under Section 31(1)(a) of the Children Act 2001 which carries a maximum jail term of 10 years or RM20,000 fine or both, if convicted.

The victims were Norazira’s children from a previous marriage.

Missing woman found dead

The body of Kareen Kaur, who went missing last Friday, was found beside the North-South Expressway near Kulaijaya.

She was believed to be the victim of a hit-and-run accident involving a lorry.

Kulaijaya OCPD Supt Zulkefly Yahya said two reports had been lodged with the police, which could have explained how Kareen, 35, ended up in Kulaijaya after she told family members that she was returning to her hometown in Kluang.

“She took a taxi from Larkin Central on Friday to Kluang. The moment the taxi reached Kulaijaya, she apparently went berserk, causing the driver to stop his vehicle along the expressway.

“He told the police she then jumped out of the car and disappeared into the bushes,” he said here yesterday.

Umno's Kuala Besut rep A Rahman Mokhtar dies

Kuala Besut assemblyman Dr A. Rahman Mokhtar (pix) passed away at the Sultanah Nur Zahirah hospital due to breathing difficulties.

The second term assemblyman from Umno passed away at 10.18am and will be buried at Masjid Teluk Bayu cemetery in Kuala Besut later today.

Dr A. Rahman, 55, was appointed to a second term as the health, women's development, family and community exco chairman after the general election.

He was admitted to the hospital last week and warded in the intensive care unit (ICU) after complaining of chest pains.

Lim Chin Aik's family hasn't obtained a death certificate

GEORGE TOWN: THE funeral of Lim Chin Aik, 44, who is presumed dead after a lightning arrestor at Menara Umno landed on his car during a freak storm on June 13, went ahead yesterday although his family had not obtained a death certificate.

The mood was somber as family members and friends gathered to pay their last respects to Lim at Lim Jetty here.

His wife, Lee Chai Song, 48, cut a forlorn figure while his mother, Ang Kim Looi @ Ang Kim Hooi, 70, cried and had to be consoled.

The funeral procession from the jetty began at 11am, with Lim's eldest son, Chia Yiang, 20, carrying an urn bearing mud from the incident site in Jalan Macalister, and daughter Hui Jiune, 13, carrying his portrait.

Another son, Chia Oon, 18, who has Down's syndrome, was seen carrying a bunting, expressing the family's hope for the issuance of a death certificate.

Penang temple agrees to house storm victim’s urn

The Kek Lok Si Temple has agreed to allow the late Lim Chin Aik’s urn to be placed on its premises in Air Itam.

Chin Aik’s wife Lee Chai Song had filled the urn with mud scooped from the wrecked car parts found at the crater in Jalan Macalister.

Lim is believed dead and his body buried at least 40m or 13 storeys underground after his car was hit by a lightning arrestor that snapped and fell off the 21-storey Menara Umno during a freak storm on June 13.

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said the state had appointed lawyers Karpal Singh and Gobind Singh Deo to represent the family to look into the legal matters.

“I’ve spoken to Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and he promised to make a request to the Attorney-General to hold an inquest,” he told a press conference at Komtar yesterday.

He said National Registration Department (NRD) director Datuk Jariah Mohd Said had in a letter explained that under Section 18 of the Births and Deaths Registration Act 1957 (Act 299), the department could not issue a death certificate yet.

‘Body buried 13 storeys deep’

Former Institution of Engineers Malaysia (northern branch) chairman Lim Kok Khong says the body of Lim Chin Aik is believed to be buried at least 40m or 13 storeys underground and under a 30m-long solid mass of steel-reinforced concrete.

Kok Khong said the sheared off length of the lightning arrestor's concrete section was 38m-long and it had directly impacted the driver's section.

“It was so great it completely cut off the driver's section and drove it deep into the ground,” Kok Khong said. “He would have been killed instantly.”

“Imagine a giant pencil being driven into the ground, the top quarter would have broken off, shattering the surrounding surface, while the rest was completely buried underground.

“The remainder of the car was dragged down to a depth of 8m to 9m.

“Only the upper 10m of the arrestor's concrete section has been recovered,” he said. “The rest remains buried with the victim.”

Technical Explanation why failure to retrieve the body in Jalan Macalister incident

Further to the technical explanation of the Menara UMNO tragedy provided by MPPP engineers yesterday: The technical briefing was professional and comprehensive,... but not widely circulated. There is still a gap between the technical report from the experts and the reports in the media, leading to the public wondering why the victim's remains cannot be recovered from the impact site.

The simple reason is that MPPP has literally hit a concrete wall in the effort to recover the remains.

During the freak storm, the top section of the wing/fin-wall on the UMNO Tower sheared off and came down on Jalan Macalister. This section of the wall was approximately 38m long and was mostly constructed of reinforced concrete. The mass of the section may have been as much as 200 metric tons, and it fell from a height of approximately 70m.

The photos below are still images captured from a police CCTV that captured the moment of impact. The first frame shows the concrete mass impacting the victim's car. In the next frame, the car completely vanishes from view as it is driven into the impact crater.
