DAP gives Utusan Malaysia 48 hours to answer letter of demand

DAP national legal head Gobind Singh Deo (pic) has given Umno-controlled daily Utusan Malaysia 48 hours to respond to a letter of demand over two defamatory articles.

The two articles headlined "At last the drama has ended" and "Kit Siang manipulated CEC elections?", were dated August 17 and 18.

The first article quoted the Equity Report said to be written by a Father Augustus Chen, while the other report was that DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang had manipulated the party polls last December.

"The article quoting the Equity Report had no verification. Editor Zulkifli Jalil and reporter Kasthuri Jeevendran as well as Utusan Malaysia, have to answer all the allegations," Gobind said at the party's headquarters in Kuala Lumpur today.

LKY doubt Pakatan can rule Malaysia - Time for Kuan Yew to ‘ride into the sunset’, says Karpal

Karpal Singh hit out at Singapore’s Lee Kuan Yew today for doubting Pakatan Rakyat’s (PR) ability to lead Malaysia, saying it was time for the elderly former prime minister to give up the reins of leadership and “quietly ride into the sunset”.

Commenting on Lee’s recently released book “One Man’s View of the World”, the DAP chairman and Bukit Gelugor MP said Lee had every right to give his views but the Singaporean politician should first look at his own party.

“His comment that Pakatan Rakyat (PR) will not effectively govern the country had it been successful in winning over federal power is without any basis,” the DAP national chairman said in a press conference here.

Karpal said even though PR has only 89 representatives in Parliament but they are of better quality than the Cabinet under Barisan Nasional.

Karpal: I’ll declare assets when CM asks for it

DAP national chairman Karpal Singh has no problem declaring his assets and will do so when Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng calls for all local MPs to declare their assets.

“I have always advocated that all elected representatives publicly declare their assets. I welcome and fully support the Chief Minister’s recommendation that MPs in Penang declare their assets, and I will do so in due time,” he said yesterday.

However, the Bukit Gelugor MP said he would not respond to every single call from other parties and individuals such as Penang Bar Committee criminal law chairman Ranjit Singh Dhillon over the issue.

“I do not have the time to respond to this kind of people,” he said.

Karpal, Anwar to sue Umno man, Utusan, NST, TV3 over bribery claim

Pakatan Rakyat (PR) leaders Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Karpal Singh said today they will sue Barisan Nasional (BN)’s Permatang Pauh candidate Dr Mazlan Ismail and three media outlets next week for defamation over corruption claims.

Karpal also denied Mazlan’s allegations that he was paid over RM50 million by Anwar as legal fees and to bribe judges and prosecutors.

“They’re ridiculous, frivolous, without any basis and made recklessly,” Karpal told reporters at the PKR headquarters here today, after lodging a police report jointly with Anwar on the matter.

“We intend to collate the necessary evidence to file actions against TV3, Utusan and New Straits Times, and of course, Mazlan himself,” added the DAP chairman.

Media Prima, which publishes the English daily New Straits Times, is owned by Umno. The ruling party also owns the Utusan Group that publishes Utusan Malaysia, a Malay-language daily. TV3 is a news network operated by Media Prima.

Karpal tells Tunku Aziz to cease attacks on DAP

DAP national chairman Karpal Singh has warned former DAP vice-chairman Tunku Aziz Tunku Ibrahim to cease further attacks on the party or he would bring the latter to court.

"He is completely getting out of hand. I have been watching him very closely.

"The DAP leadership was guilty of serious misjudgement in having given Tunku Aziz membership for the party and immediately made a vice-chairman.

"He is not grateful but an opportunist," he told a press conference after a thanksgiving session with the public at a market in Jalan Gangsa in Green Lane on Sunday.

Tunku Aziz had quit the party in May last year.

Abolish Senate, says Karpal

DAP chairman Karpal Singh said today the Federal Constitution should be amended to abolish the Senate.

“There is no need for the Senate. It is an unnecessary expense required to be borne by the people. It does not serve a useful purpose.

“It only encourages those who have been rejected by the people or others to be brought into Parliament through the back door via the Senate as in law Parliament also includes the Senate,” he told a press conference here.

Karpal lauds RoS’s stand on DAP’s party-election glitch

DAP chairman Karpal Singh today welcomed the Registrar of Societies (RoS)’s statement that the party may not be punished for a vote-counting glitch in the party’s own elections last December.

“I welcome the statement by the Registrar of Societies, Datuk Abdul Rahman Othman, that the DAP may not be necessarily be penalised for its party election glitch as the RoS did not intend to deregister the party,” Karpal wrote in a three-paragraph statement today.

“The DAP will give the Registrar of Societes every cooperation in its investigation into the complaints made over the legality of the recent election of the CEC. No doubt, there must be closure to this matter as soon as possible,” the Bukit Gelugor MP said.

Karpal: DAP joining Barisan is “out of the question”

DAP chairman Karpal Singh said he would leave the party if it were to join Barisan Nasional.

“Joining Barisan is completely out of the question. I'll be the first to walk out if that happens, and I'm sure 100% (party members) will walk out with me,” he said.

However, Karpal said DAP was prepared to work with Barisan if the ruling coalition was willing to fully accept Pakatan Rakyat's election manifesto.

“Lim Kit Siang (DAP adviser) said it would be better if Barisan joins Pakatan.

“We can work with Barisan, only if they accept the Pakatan manifesto, then we will give serious consideration (to collaborate),” he said in his speech at a DAP conference attended by all its elected representatives.

GE13: Karpal gives Sim and Lee second chance, withdraw as independent candidates within 24 hours

DAP national chairman Karpal Singh has given 24 hours for Sim Tong Him and former Teratai representative Jenice Lee to publicly apologise and withdraw themselves as independent candidates.

"The party will not hesitate from expelling those who commit an act of rebellion against the party.

"But I give them 24 hours to publicly apologise and declare that they would not sustain the status as Independent.

"What they have done could have been driven by emotions but it is unforgivable and intolerable," he said in a press conference Sunday.

Sim is the incumbent for the Kota Melaka parliamentary, but he also filed his papers as an Independent for the Kota Laksamana state seat in Malacca.

DAP chairman Karpal Singh said today that if Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar fails to arrest “Datuk T” over the sex video purportedly showing Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim then the public should resort to citizen arrests.

Last month, Tan Sri Abdul Rahim Thamby Chik admitted that businessman Datuk Shazryl Eskay Abdullah, Perkasa’s Datuk Shuib Lazim and himself were collectively the mysterious “Datuk T” behind the sex video screening.

The former Malacca chief minister also admitted that both he and Shazryl were behind the video.

DAP will fight PAS lottery ban, warns Karpal

Karpal Singh warned PAS last night that DAP will fight its Pakatan Rakyat (PR) ally if it stands firm on the unconstitutional lottery ban in Kelantan.

In an apparent ultimatum, the DAP national chairman warned the Islamist party not to “play with the law” and to respect the rights of non-Malays in the state.

“Any attempt to go against the law [and] we will also go against PAS,” he told the 5,000-strong crowd at the DAP 45th anniversary dinner here.

The High Court has set July 1 for case management of Bukit Gelugor member of parliament Karpal Singh's RM10 million suit against Utusan Melayu (M) Sdn Bhd over a defamatory article regarding his comments on Islam.

In his statement of claim, Karpal Singh, a lawyer, claimed that the article, entitled "DAP Diingat Jangan Bakar Perasaan Melayu" (DAP reminded not to inflame sentiments of Malays), published on Aug 25, 2008, in Utusan Malaysia, stated that he made the comments on Islam in his welcoming speech at the 15th DAP National Congress held the previous day.

Karpal Singh claimed that the alleged defamatory words were understood to mean, among others, that he was a politician bent on creating ill-will among the different communities in the country, were absolutely false and malicious, and were intended to destroy his professional and political careers.

The young man who claims opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim sodomized him acknowledged in court Monday that he had met with Malaysia's prime minister four days before making a police complaint against Anwar.

The defense hopes that Saiful Bukhari Azlan's testimony under cross-examination will bolster its contention that the sodomy trial against Anwar is a political conspiracy masterminded by Prime Minister Najib Razak and his wife.

Saiful's admission that he met with Najib proves "the issue of conspiracy by Najib and higher-ups in the government," Anwar told reporters after the hearing.

Anwar Ibrahim's Sodomy II trial: Prosecution refused to furnish witness list-Reporters harrassed by Anwar's supporters

The trial of Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's sodomy charge resumed this morning at the High Court here with Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan taking the witness stand at 10.40am.
Mohd Saiful, Anwar's former aide, was cross-examined by the former deputy prime minister's lawyers.
But before Mohd Saiful took the stand, Anwar's lead counsel Karpal Singh, had asked the court to compel the prosecution to handover its witness list.

Karpal said although it is not stated in the Criminal Procedure Code as an obligation for the prosecution to provide the witness list to the defence team, he, however, insisted that they shall be provided with it in the interest of fair trial.

Witness and passenger beside Aminul Rasyid denied that they try to ram the police car.

The passenger who was with 14-year-old Aminulrasyid Amzah when he was shot dead by police last week, has cast doubts over a police allegation that the latter had had tried to ram the car into police personnel.

"When he was shot, his body fell on my lap, but his foot was still on the accelerator. So the car continued moving and the police kept on firing shots," he told a press conference at Aminulrasyid's family home in Shah Alam this afternoon.

Recounting the incident, Azamuddin Omar, 15, said the Proton Iswara eventually crashed into a wall, after which the police continued shooting.

This was his first public statement on the incident.
