GE13: Irate PAS leaders demand explanation from Johor DAP deputy chairman over call to reject Islamist party

With polling day just a week away, irate PAS leaders have asked Johor DAP deputy chairman Norman Fernandez to explain his statement urging voters to reject the Islamist party.

However, Fernandez has reiterated he would continue to express his personal views on sensitive issues such as hudud and public interest cases.

“This is a democracy and everyone is entitled to their opinion. If PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang, PAS secretary-general Datuk Mustafa Ali and PAS vice-president Datuk Husam Musa can give their opinions, why not me?” he asked.

In an article written in the syed outsidethebox.blogspot.com blog on Saturday, Fernandez said the DAP must realise that PAS was no longer an honest, viable partner of Pakatan Rakyat and must be courageous enough to admit it.

DAP not happy with the latest statement on Islamic law

KOTA BARU: PAS leaders yesterday pressed ahead with the implementation of hudud as traditional voters of DAP view the latest twist with growing apprehension.

Further confirmation of the losing fight to paper over the Pas-DAP antagonism over ideology ahead of the May 5 polls came when Datuk Ahmad Yakob, the No. 2 in Kelantan's Pas government said:

"Hudud is still our struggle although it is not included in the manifesto. We will continue to pursue it."

Ahmad, who is Kelantan Pas deputy commissioner and deputy menteri besar, was speaking at the launch of the Kelantan Pas manifesto themed "Blessings, Prosperity and Welfare" at the state Pas building here .

Lim said the hudud issue had been played up to create cracks within Pakatan Rakyat.

The DAP said today that Barisan Nasional’s (BN) unity should also be questioned following disagreement among component parties in the ruling coalition over the implementation of hudud law.

DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng told reporters that since the issue of hudud has been played up to create cracks within Pakatan Rakyat (PR), BN too should be asked the same question.

“MCA doesn’t agree to hudud. Umno agrees. So will BN split? Why is this not asked of BN?” the Penang chief minister said.

MCA president Datuk Seri Chua Soi Lek said this morning that it will leave the ruling coalition if hudud law is implemented by Umno.

“MCA’s stand is very clear. We will object strongly to hudud. If Umno wants to implement hudud, we will pull MCA out of Barisan Nasional — simple as that,” he said.

MCA threatens to quit BN if Umno implements hudud law

The MCA will leave the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition if hudud law is implemented by Umno.

“MCA’s stand is very clear. We will object strongly to hudud. If Umno wants to implement hudud, we will pull MCA out of Barisan Nasional - simple as that,” MCA president Datuk Sri Dr Chua Soi Lek told reporters here today.

“Our stand is very clear. Umno wants to implement hudud, MCA is no party to it, we’ll get out of it,” he added.

When asked to comment on Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin’s statement yesterday that Umno supported hudud law in principle, Dr Chua (picture) said: “That can be understood because all Muslim support the teachings of the Quran. But you must see his qualifying statement that Malaysia is not ready to implement hudud law. And that’s very clear.”
