Putrajaya approves tracking devices, rollout next month to track criminals

The Home Ministry plans to use the electronic monitoring device (EMD) on offenders charged under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 by end of next month.

Attorney-General Tan Sri Gani Patail confirmed that the government had approved the use of EMDs to track organised and violent crime suspects to ensure they would not commit other crimes while out on bail.

"For me, the faster (this is implemented), the better. Of course, we would like to see this (device) used as soon as possible. We believe that it will be implemented by September," he told reporters after the Crime Prevention Forum, here today.

Abdul Gani (picture) was responding to a comment made by Performance Management and Delivery Unit (Pemandu) senior analyst, Farah Intan Burhanudin, that the device would be used on suspects caught under Ops Cantas.

A police patrol car approached the vehicle and instructed the men to step out of the car.

Deputy Minister P. Waythamoorthy has raised questions about the shooting of five Indian gangsters in Penang. He believes the police executed them.

His comments are likely to put pressure on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak who was criticised heavily by Umno politicians for appointing Waythamoorthy to the administration.

MIC Youth chief T. Mohan did so too, saying it would further weaken Indian support for the government.

Waythamoorthy, who is also Hindraf chairperson, said that in the past few years many Indian youths had been shot dead by police who were not able to justify the killings.

Cases involving 04 gang

PENANG police shot dead five members of the notorious 04 gang who had been staying at a service apartment in Sungai Nibong.

The five, all in their 20s, were said to have been involved in he recent spate of shooting cases in the state this year.

ON AUG 8, K. Veerappan, a 37-year-old scrap dealer believed to be associated with Gang 36, was shot dead when he stopped the car he was driving near a traffic light in Anson Road.

The shooting happened after a motorcyclist rode up to the car and the pillion rider whipped out a pistol and fired 14 shots, 10 of which hit Veerappan’s neck, cheek and ab domen.

Earlier the same day, a gunman fired at least six shots at a businessman’s bungalow in Jalan Utama. No one was injured in the incident, believed to be a triad’s warning to the businessman.

Five dead in shootout at Pantai Jerejak

Police today shot dead in a shootout here five members of a triad gang believed to be also hired killers wanted for murders and attempted murders in three states, said Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar.

He said police believed one of the dead men was the leader of the gang and they were tracking down the remaining members of the gang which had committed the crimes in Penang, Kedah and Negri Sembilan.

The five men were shot dead in an apartment in Sungai Nibong, at 4.30 am during a shootout with a raiding police team from the D9 Special Investigation Division of the Penang CID with the assistance of the Bukit Aman D9 and Kedah D9 divisions.

Police recovered three guns from the dead men, namely a silver Norinco, a silver .38 revolver and a black Walther PPK.

Cops recover three pistols from 04 gang shootout

Penang police recovered three pistols from the suspected members of the notorious 04 gang who were killed in a shootout at the Century Bay service apartments in Pantai Jerejak here earlier today.

Early reports showed four of the suspects had past criminal convictions including for dadah offences and having placed as a restricted resident. One of the suspects, aged 21 from Bagan Jermal, Butterworth, has no past criminal conviction. His body was recovered in a room together with another gang member, aged 25.

A revolver was found in the room of the three-bedroom apartment of the 15-storey complex, located about one kilometre from the Pesta Pulau Pinang expo site in Sungai Nibong.

The body of the third suspect, aged 23, from Medan Penaga here, was recovered in the middle room. Another revolver was also recovered from the room. The body of the remaining two suspects, aged 27 and 31, were recovered in the main room. Another pistol was recovered from them.

5 gangster member shot to death Families seek explanation for shooting deaths

Family members of the five men shot dead by police are demanding an explanation for the shooting.

More than 50 family members and friends of the deceased gathered outside the Penang mortuary last night seeking answers.

One of the deceased’s uncle, S. Nadarajah, said they could not claim the five bodies as investigations were pending.

“Why did they have to shoot the men when they could’ve just fired a warning shot? They were all sleeping inside. I believe the police could have easily apprehended them,” the 62-year-old told reporters.

V.R. Murugasen, 52, the father of one of the men, is furious and baffled as to how his son and four friends were identified as members of the notorious Gang 04.

“My son has no criminal record, so how can he be affiliated to the gang? I think the police are lying just to cover their backs.

Five gangsters shot dead in Penang

Police gunned down five Gang 04 members who are linked to at least 10 murders in a shootout at an apartment in Sungai Nibong.

Ballistic tests on the three firearms recovered from them showed that the five were involved in at least 12 shooting cases in three states.

Police believe they have now solved at least 10 murder cases in Penang (seven), Kedah (two) and Negri Sembilan (one), and two attempted murders in Penang.

The dead have been identified as J. Gobinath, 31, R. Ramesh, 27, N. Rakan, 25, M. Suresh, 25, and M. Gobinath, 21.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said police laid an ambush at the apartment block at about 4.30am yesterday before moving to the unit on the 11th floor where the suspects were staying.

Firearms openly sold via Facebook

They are not only cheap but easily available. This is the picture portrayed on two Facebook accounts found to be selling firearms openly in Malaysia.

A check found that a Facebook account claimed to offer a range of pistols, revolvers and assault rifles for between RM500 and RM15,000.

The list of weapons for sale on the account included AK-47 assault rifles at RM12,000, Smith & Wesson pistols at RM500 and revolvers with two boxes of ammunition at RM15,000.

Another Facebook account declared that it could offer about 10 types of firearms, among them E&C M16A4, Tercel M1911 airsoft gun and S&T Mosin Nagant Gas Rifle (Real Wood) for between RM600 and RM1,250, resembling real weapons.

MyWatch chairman completes surgery, bullet taken for analysis

The five-hour surgery to remove a bullet lodged near Mywatch chairman R. Sri Sanjeevan's ribcage was conducted successfully and ended at 7pm at the Serdang Hospital today.
MyWatch advisor S. Gobi Krishnan said the bullet was taken to the police forensic laboratory in Cheras for analysis upon the directive of Bukit Aman CID director, Datuk Hadi Ho Abdullah and Sanjeevan was recuperating.

"Hadi has assured the family that the investigations would be monitored by him and the family was told to meet him next week to assist further in the investigations,"

"However, we're still not sure who would be investigating this case as of now." he added.

Sri Sanjeevan, 29, was critically injured in the right rib after he was hit by a shot fired by two men on a motorcycle at a junction in Taman Cempaka, Bahau at about 4.30pm on July 27.

He is currently being treated at the Serdang Hospital after being transferred from the Tuanku Ja'afar Hospital in Seremban.

Taxi driver in banker’s assassin hunt hit with firearms charges

Taxi driver Chew Siang Chee, arrested by police for allegedly transporting the hitman who killed banker Ahmad Hussain Najadi, today claimed trial to the possession of a firearm and ammunition at the Sessions Court here.

The 45-year-old was detained shortly after the assassination in which the founder of Arab-Malaysian Development Bank was gunned down in broad daylight while leaving the Kuan Yin Temple in Lorong Ceylon here on July 29.

According to a report by The Star, Chew pleaded not guilty to charges of possessing a pistol and four bullets under sections 8 and 8(a) of the Firearms Act.

Illegal possession of guns is punishable by imprisonment of up to 14 years and at least four strokes of the cane, while unlawfully having ammunition attracts a penalty of up to seven years’ jail and a fine of up to RM10,000.

Man shot dead at Penang's Anson Road traffic light

A man was executed gangland style after stopping at a traffic light at Anson Road here.

Police identified the deceased as K. Veerapan, 37, who was gunned down at point blank range by a pillion rider at around 11.50am on Thursday.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Gan Kong Meng said the deceased lived in Air Itam, Penang and has three previous convictions for cases involving narcotics.

The victim was driving a BMW car bore a Kuala Lumpur registration plate, although it is speculated that the car was borrowed from a friend.

ACP Gan said the assailant fired at least 14 times at Veerapan, with 10 bullets hitting him in the cheek, neck and right abdomen.

First a warning letter, then six shots fired at bungalow in Pulau Tikus

At least six shots were fired at a bungalow of a businessman in Pulau Tikus early Thursday, but no one was injured in the incident, police said.

OCPD Gan Kong Meng said the businessman had earlier lodged a police report claiming that he received an extortion letter together with six bullets.

Only the businessman's 29-year-old son, his wife and their maid were at home during the 1.15am incident.


ACP Gan said the couple had a shock when they discovered fragments of broken window panels and bullet marks at the house here in Jalan Utama.

Triad top gun latest to be shot in Penang’s third day of shootings

The shooting spree in Penang continued for a third day in a row, with the latest victim being a 43-year-old chief bouncer of a dance club here.

The victim survived the attack, with only a single bullet hitting him in the left thigh.

Star Online reported that a gunman shot at him seven times in front of the entrance to entertainment outlets in a mall in Jalan Datuk Keramat.

Quoting sources, it reported that the victim, known only as Too Pek, had been talking to the gunman at the open carpark who then shot him as he headed towards the entertainment outlets.

Cops name AmBank founder’s shooter, nab 3 other suspects

City police today named Kong Swee Kwan as the main suspect behind the high-profile murder of Arab-Malaysian Bank founder Hussain Ahmad Najadi.

Three other people, believed to be involved in the killing, have also been arrested.

Kong, 44, is at large but is believed to be still in the country, Kuala Lumpur CID chief Datuk Ku Chin Wah told reporters.

The suspected gunman, who was previously named as “Sei Ngan Chai”, a popular moniker in Cantonese for those wearing spectacles as it means “Four-Eyed Man”, has a record of possession of stolen goods and extortion, he said.

A second suspect, a 42-year-old man, has been taken in for questioning.

Motorist shot at close range by 2 men on bike

A man was shot by two assailants on a motorcyle while he was driving at a housing area in Chemor near here on Wednesday night.

The 29-year-old victim received four gun shot wounds at close range when the assailants took aim at his life at Taman Klebang Putra, about 18km from here.

The assailants neared the victim's car before they fired six shots, four of which hit the victim. The incident happened around 11.15pm.

According to Ipoh police chief Assistant Commissioner Sum Chang Keong, there were two other people inside the car who were believed to be the victim's family members.
