Five dead in shootout at Pantai Jerejak

Police today shot dead in a shootout here five members of a triad gang believed to be also hired killers wanted for murders and attempted murders in three states, said Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar.

He said police believed one of the dead men was the leader of the gang and they were tracking down the remaining members of the gang which had committed the crimes in Penang, Kedah and Negri Sembilan.

The five men were shot dead in an apartment in Sungai Nibong, at 4.30 am during a shootout with a raiding police team from the D9 Special Investigation Division of the Penang CID with the assistance of the Bukit Aman D9 and Kedah D9 divisions.

Police recovered three guns from the dead men, namely a silver Norinco, a silver .38 revolver and a black Walther PPK.

Cops recover three pistols from 04 gang shootout

Penang police recovered three pistols from the suspected members of the notorious 04 gang who were killed in a shootout at the Century Bay service apartments in Pantai Jerejak here earlier today.

Early reports showed four of the suspects had past criminal convictions including for dadah offences and having placed as a restricted resident. One of the suspects, aged 21 from Bagan Jermal, Butterworth, has no past criminal conviction. His body was recovered in a room together with another gang member, aged 25.

A revolver was found in the room of the three-bedroom apartment of the 15-storey complex, located about one kilometre from the Pesta Pulau Pinang expo site in Sungai Nibong.

The body of the third suspect, aged 23, from Medan Penaga here, was recovered in the middle room. Another revolver was also recovered from the room. The body of the remaining two suspects, aged 27 and 31, were recovered in the main room. Another pistol was recovered from them.

5 gangster member shot to death Families seek explanation for shooting deaths

Family members of the five men shot dead by police are demanding an explanation for the shooting.

More than 50 family members and friends of the deceased gathered outside the Penang mortuary last night seeking answers.

One of the deceased’s uncle, S. Nadarajah, said they could not claim the five bodies as investigations were pending.

“Why did they have to shoot the men when they could’ve just fired a warning shot? They were all sleeping inside. I believe the police could have easily apprehended them,” the 62-year-old told reporters.

V.R. Murugasen, 52, the father of one of the men, is furious and baffled as to how his son and four friends were identified as members of the notorious Gang 04.

“My son has no criminal record, so how can he be affiliated to the gang? I think the police are lying just to cover their backs.

Perak police wants to be more professional

THE Perak police force aims to mould its men to be more professional, be it in appearance, execution of duties or discipline.

State police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mohd Shukri Dahlan said he would be working closely with officers at the supervisory level to make sure that their men served the public better.

“Besides this, we will also focus on implementing initiatives set out under the National Key Result Areas to reduce crime,” he said after presenting excellence awards to 118 policemen from the Kuala Kangsar, Sungai Siput, Gerik and Pengkalan Hulu districts.

The presentation ceremony was held at the Kuala Kangsar district police headquarters, last Thursday.

Metal detectors and more CCTVs to ensure safety of Malaysians and cops

: While looking after the safety of the people, the police are also beefing up security at their stations nationwide.

Bukit Aman Management Director Comm Datuk Mortadza Nazarene said the security measures would include stringent checks on visitors to police stations.

“Metal detectors may be more widely used to scan visitors. We must ensure the safety of the public and police personnel at the stations at all times,” he told The Star yesterday.

“We are also looking into wider surveillance at the police stations, including installing more CCTVs,” he added when commenting on recent clashes at police stations.

Khalid Abu Bakar new IGP, Bakri Zinin deputy IGP from Friday

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar(right) will replace Tan Sri Ismail Omar as the new Inspector-General of Police (IGP) effective Friday.

The Prime Minister's Department, in a statement issued on Tuesday, said Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Datuk Seri Bakri Zinin(left) will take over as the new deputy IGP, effective the same day.

It said the Yang di-Pertuan Agong had consented to their appointments.

IGP 'retiring, not resigning'

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar will go on mandatory retirement on May 17 and was not resigning because of pressure from political parties as claimed by certain groups.

Assistant head of the IGP Secretariat (corporate communications) Assistant Commissioner Ramli Mohamed Yusoof said the postings on social media and blogs on the purported resignation of the IGP were slanderous and malicious.

He said yesterday Ismail's retirement ceremony would be held a day before he officially retire.

Aminul’s family kept in dark over decision to charge cop

Aminulrasyid Amzah’s family lawyer today slammed police for not bothering to inform them that a policemen was to be charged for the fatal shooting of the 14-year-old schoolboy.

“We are appalled that neither the police nor the Attorney-General’s Chambers had kept the family or their lawyers informed that a suspect was going to be charged today,” lawyer N. Surendran said.

He said that police and the AG had failed to realise that Aminulrasyid and his family were victims in the case and had the right to be kept informed about developments.

“Why all the secrecy?” he asked.

A police corporal was charged in the sessions court here today in connection with the shooting death of teenager Aminulrasyid Amzah (pix) during a car chase here last month.

Corporal Jenain Subi, 48, pleaded not guilty before judge M.Gunalan to causing the death of Aminulrasyid, 15, in Jalan Tarian 11/2, Section 11, between 1.10am and 2am on April 26.

If convicted, he faces up to 30 years in jail and liability of a fine.

A government labourer suffered chest injuries from a stray bullet when police fired on an amok armed with a knife in Kuala Selangor last night, making it the third such shooting case in as many weeks.

S. Surentiran, 21, a JKR labourer, was critically injured as two policemen fired in self-defence at a former army commando who tried to attack them with a “Rambo knife”.
