NS camp in Penang shut after 48 trainees get high fever
The National Service Syruz Camp in Macang Bubok was temporarily closed two weeks ago after 48 trainees suffered high fever as a result of an Adenovirus infection.
Penang health director Datuk Dr Lailanor Ibrahim said Thursday the first 20 trainees came down with influenza-like symptoms and were admitted to the hospital.
“The number of trainees who fell sick increased drastically within a week and a decision was made to close the camp to control the outbreak.

“Since then, we have been working closely with the NS department to monitor the condition,” he said when contacted here on Thursday.
It was reported that NS Training Department director-general Datuk Abdul Hadi Awang Kechil said that a training camp in Penang had been closed temporarily and the 200 other trainees there had been allowed to go home.
Adenovirus infection commonly causes illness of the respiratory system, with symptoms ranging from the common cold to pneumonia, croup (hoarse cough) and bronchitis.
People are usually infected through direct contact with those infected or through droplets from coughs or sneezes.
